Disability Advocacy Project (DAP) Staff Attorney

The Erie County Bar Association Volunteer Lawyers Project (VLP) is seeking full-time Staff Attorneys to join its Immigration Program, in our Batavia, NY office. This office handles work, under the Office of New Americans (ONA) State contract, at the Buffalo Federal Detention Facility in Batavia. This is a public defender model program where we represent all detained people who are facing deportation and are not otherwise represented. · Design, coordinate, and implement of place-based advocacy in low-income neighborhoods in the Capital Region to address community-identified needs and to work with other LASNNY staff to assess and address the legal needs of their clients.
· Conduct client intake and provide counsel on a broad spectrum of legal services to the low-income residents of these neighborhoods.
· Host legal education workshops, and ask lawyer appointments.
· Facilitate the development and distribution of legal information, self-help information, and tools, advocate training, and technical assistance.
· Provide legal support for groups and organizing efforts, community agency staff, and advocates.
· Host effective community legal education including clinics and Know Your Rights events.
Skills and Education Requirements:
· JD from an accredited law school.

Work Environment:

Successful Candidate
We are seeking an associate who is a self-starter, who has a strong work ethic and organizational skills, both of which are essential for this position. You must have excellent oral communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively and be personable with clients, court staff, adversaries and witnesses. You must be true team-player genuinely interested in working in a supportive, collaborative environment.
The associates job responsibilities will include preparation of pleadings, motions, settlement agreements and/or stipulations of settlement and briefs, as needed, and assisting with preparations for depositions and trials. The associate will also be expect to appear in Court, in both Nassau and Suffolk Counties on Long Island, and the boroughs of New York City, and will be responsible for assisting with cases at every stage of the litigation cycle, as well as client communications, reviewing new files for coverage and collaborating with the senior attorneys to develop a cost-effective litigation strategy. The associate must be prepared to organize and track case statuses and assist with or handle pre-trial court appearances and general day-to-day aspects of client matters. The associates role will be to zealously represent clients in divorce, custody, child support and other family matters brought in Supreme Court or Family Court, and any concurrent matters. Knowledge of Supreme Court and Family Court procedures is necessary; we are particularly interested in a candidate who previously worked in a family/divorce clinic in law school or internship/clerkship with Judges in the field.
