The Rochester Rotary Sunshine Camp is an all-inclusive, fully accessible summer camp for children and young adults with a wide range of abilities and experiences, and we are hiring counselors (to work our two-week overnight camp) and program staff members (to work all summer)!
Sunshine Camp has been around for over 100 years, and we are proud to provide a summer camp experience where we strive for accessibility and inclusion for all. Our 157-acre campus located in Rush, NY is home to six cabins, a pool, a mini golf course, a pond for fishing and boating, climbing wall and zipline, and much more - all fully accessible. Sunshine Camp is a place where campers and staff alike come to have fun, build meaningful relationships, learn about others, get some Vitamin D, and celebrate the human experience that we all share!

Sunshine Camp involves two consecutive 1-week sessions. Most counselors work both sessions, but this is not required. We are an overnight camp, so counselors will reside on campus and sleep in a staff building for the duration of the each session. In addition to the two weeks of camp, we hold a mandatory pre-camp orientation weekend for all staff at camp. Orientation gives our new staff a chance to meet everyone, get acquainted with campus, and receive important training. Counselors are paid $500 for each session worked, as well as $125 for attending orientation. In addition to counselors, we are also hiring program staff for summer 2025. Program staff work at camp all summer. So if you are looking for longer-term summer work, you can be considered for a position with program staff as well.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The primary responsibility as a lifeguard is to prevent drowning and other injuries from occurring. Candidates must be able to ensure the safety of patrons by minimizing or eliminating hazardous situations or behaviors. SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Your first responsibility always is to protect the well-being of each individual swimmer.
• Opening and closing the pool each day according to scheduled hours.
• Actively guards and scan the pool area at all times; refrains from socializing while guarding.

POSITION SUMMARY:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

<li>Maintains and secures confidentiality of all health forms in compliance with HIPAA. The Health Supervisor and the Camp Director/Director of Camp Administration have the only access to these securely locked medical records. Decisions to release medical information to other staff members will be based on the camper’s needs and parents’ authorization.</li>
<li>Models and teaches good health practices for all staff and campers.</li>
<li>Supplies and maintains first aid kits for specified areas in camp and for out of camp trips and hikes.</li>
<li>Refers campers and staff to physician’s care at clinic or hospital with approval of Camp Director &amp; camp physician on call.</li>
<li>Confers with parents as necessary.</li>
<li>Screens incoming campers for any illnesses, infections, bruises, rashes and other health concerns.</li>
<li>Notifies the appropriate staff members of camper allergies, medications and health concerns, which include the Head Cook and Unit Counselors.</li>
<li>Consult with the camp physician on call regarding camper and staff medical health. </li>
<li>Establishes a system for health screening for arriving campers and staff, as well as a system for health screening for trips out-of-camp.</li>
<li>Conducts an inventory of supplies and places orders when necessary, ensuring the timely arrival of supplies.</li>
<li>Participate in and lead specific areas of staff training pertaining to camp health and safety, including, but not limited to standard precautions, how to administer aid and what type of aid needs more then general first aid.</li>
<li>Responsible for the safety and well-being of campers and staff while in the infirmary.</li>
<li>Responsible for maintaining a clean and sanitized infirmary at all times.</li>
<li>Expected to stay on camp property while camp is in session, including pre-camp training and overnights.</li>

Job Description:

<li>Ensure Pool Area is tidy.</li>
<li>Ensure the safety of residents and guests.</li>
<li>Make sure everyone is complying with the pool rules and regulations.</li>
<li>Inspect pool as needed.</li>
<li>Report to management any dangerous situations that occur.</li>
<li>Great customer service with residents.</li>
<li>Sign residents into the pool area.</li>
<li>Maintain daily logs and other paperwork as required by the County and the property.</li>

Requirements
<ul>
<li>Must be 16 years of age or older</li>
<li>Must be CPR, AED, Lifeguard, and First-Aid Certified</li>
<li>The CPR Certification MUST say Adult, infant, and child</li>
<li>Must have reliable transportation</li>

Full Job Description:
PURPOSE: Prevents drowning and injuries by providing safety instructions; recognizing and responding to emergencies; rendering Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and first aid by performing the following duties.
Duties &amp; Responsibilities: Essential Duties and Functions are numbered in the list below. Non-Essential Duties may also be listed if appropriate for the position description.
1.
Informs/enforces rules, hazards, and dangers to public/patrons; erects and adjusts signage as appropriate; warns violators, including expulsion from pool area if appropriate. 
2.
Anticipates problems and threats by observing water conditions, weather, and public/patrons' actions; recognizing victim characteristics.
3.
Rescues victims by radioing for assistance; following emergency action standards; and approaching victims using appropriate techniques. Assesses injuries and conditions; implements appropriate rescue techniques.
4.
Maintains order in swimming areas.
5.
Routinely determines chlorine content and pH value of water with water testing kit. Logs compliance testing and notifies appropriate property personnel of conditions requiring attention. 
6.
Keeps supplies and equipment ready by inventorying stock; placing orders; verifying receipt; inspecting and testing equipment; conducting pool inspections including filtration and circulating systems; distributing and collecting towels; cleaning equipment and spills.
7.
Inspects facilities for cleanliness. Uses appropriate disinfectants and other treatments as necessary. 
8.
Cleans pool decking, furniture and general pool area.
QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this position successfully an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.
Education &amp; Experience (minimum required to enter the position): No specific level of education is required.
Required Skills or Knowledge: Must be:
<ul>
<li>Red Cross/YMCA Lifeguard Training, within last 3 years</li>
<li>CPR Certification</li>
<li>First Aid Certification</li>
<li>Verify other requirements that may be specific to county / municipality of pool.</li>
</ul>
Technical Competencies:
Generally, must be 18 years of age. Individuals under 18 years olds may be considered on a case by case basis based on consultation with Human Resources.
Other licenses and certifications as required by federal, state and local law.
Language Skills:Ability to read and interpret English documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to understand safety rules and instructions by direction and physical observation.
Mathematical Skills: Basic math skills required.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions: 
Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds.
Ability to hear an active victim's cry for help.
Ability to see a passive victim in trouble. 
Ability to work outdoors in temperatures exceeding 90 degrees.
