Requirements:
Skills and Qualifications

Current Opening:

POSITION DESCRIPTION
LawNYs Geneva office seeks to fill an immediate opening for a Temporary Full-time Staff Attorney to provide eviction-related services in Livingston, Ontario, Wayne, Seneca and Yates Counties. This attorney will represent clients who are homeless or at risk of eviction and need legal and other services to stabilize their housing. The position is funded under an ERAP eviction prevention grant, and will end on September 30, 2026. The Geneva Office has a location in downtown Geneva, and satellite offices in Lyons and Geneseo. Staff Attorneys may be asked to work out of the Lyons and Geneseo Office offices as required.

Brooklyn Defender Services (BDS) seeks an attorney to join our Civil Justice Practice as a Housing and Benefits attorney to provide legal representation for individuals with concurrent criminal legal, family court, and immigration matters in Brooklyn and Queens.
BDS is a public defense office representing low-income New Yorkers in criminal, family, immigration, and civil legal matters. For nearly 30 years, BDS has worked, in and out of court, to protect and uphold the rights of individuals and to change laws and systems that perpetuate injustice and inequality. Our legal expertise work with clients is focused on the intersections of these legal systems that disproportionately impact Black and Brown communities living in poverty. 
BDS represents thousands of people each year who have diverse, complex, and multi-faceted legal needs. In addition to a zealous legal defense, our interdisciplinary teams of attorneys, social workers and advocates provide a wide range of legal and advocacy services, including for housing, public benefits, education, and employment. BDS staff work collaboratively and across disciplines to deliver high-quality legal services that serve the people we represent, their families and communities.
Our Civil Justice Practice cases on the Housing and Benefits team range from brief advice and plea consults for clients facing collateral consequences of arrest and conviction and includes full representation assistance in housing court and administrative hearings for clients facing eviction or termination from public housing, seeking essential repairs, or combatting landlord harassment and representation and advocacy for client who have been wrongfully denied public benefits. Often, allegations in family or criminal court are directly related to landlord-tenant issues and a holistic advocacy model can produce positive outcomes in both proceedings--for example, when neglect allegations in Family Court Article 10 proceedings are related to conditions in the home, our civil attorneys can help advocate and file repairs cases in housing court to ensure healthy homes for clients and their families. Civil attorneys also work on behalf of clients to ensure they have access to public benefits, adequate housing through the NYC shelter system and other entitlements. 
CJP attorneys serve as a resource for colleagues in other practice areas and will be expected to gain familiarity with underlying cases and their intersection with civil legal issues to facilitate internal referrals, assist with intake, consult on plea agreements, Article 10 settlements for better outcomes for clients. Attorneys advocate for clients facing barriers to accessing benefits and shelter, facing eviction proceedings or in need of assistance addressing unsafe housing conditions.

Staff Attorney Essential Duties
<ul>
<li>Provide legal assistance to eligible households at risk of homelessness by preventing evictions, securing mainstream benefits, and making referrals to services that will enhance the household's ability to maintain permanent housing.</li>
<li>Work collaboratively with government and nonprofit agencies that provide supportive services, income, shelter, permanent supportive housing, homelessness prevention and rapid rehousing services, and financial assistance, provide assistance to the homeless and at-risk residents.</li>
<li>Provide legal assistance in maintaining or securing permanent housing and the income necessary to retain permanent housing. Legal assistance will include eviction defense, asserting protections for tenants and fully utilizing the law to preserve tenancies and keep people safe in housing.</li>
<li>Protect public and subsidized housing tenancies and subsidies, address utility shut offs or denials of service, and secure emergency assistance, ongoing temporary assistance, and other income support necessary to achieve housing stability.</li>
<li>Provide a full range of legal services, including counsel and advice, referrals, representation in administrative hearings, affirmative and defensive litigation, systemic advocacy, community legal education, outreach and engagement, and community lawyering.</li>
<li>Experts in the Emergency Rental Assistance Program or Right to Counsel Program; related data collection.</li>
<li>Requirements and compliance therewith, and work collaboratively with other LASNNY housing attorneys/paralegals to maximize access to LASNNY services and address systemic issues that cause homelessness.</li>

Legal and Support Services at Make the Road New York
The Department of Legal and Support Services at MRNY works to strengthen the organization’s organizing work by (1) providing legal and support services to high-need immigrant communities and help meet the immediate needs of MRNY’s members; (2) helping to envision and implement leverage strategies (including strategic litigation) that help win our organizing campaigns; and (3) providing technical legal support for policy work. The Department currently employs approximately 45 attorneys and advocates. Our legal team is integrated into all aspects of the organization’s work. The Housing &amp; Benefits legal team consists of a supervising attorney, three staff attorneys and an intake and outreach paralegal.
Make the Road New York (MRNY) seeks a bilingual (Spanish &amp; English) full-time Supervising Attorney with expertise in housing law. The Supervising Attorney will oversee our Housing and Benefits practice to provide cutting-edge eviction defense and housing quality enforcement in aggressively gentrifying neighborhoods in Brooklyn and Queens. The Housing and Benefits legal team collaborates closely with our organizing team to focus on anti-harassment and prevention of displacement around our neighborhood offices in Bushwick. The Supervising Attorney will provide policy and campaign support on the areas of housing and public benefits. The Supervising Attorney will also have a small docket of housing cases representing both individuals and groups of tenants in enforcing their rights and fighting tenant harassment. 
The Supervising Attorney will be based in our Brooklyn office. MRNY currently has a hybrid work schedule with 3 days per week in person (including court time) and 2 days remote. 
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES, BUT NOT LIMITED TO:
-Oversee the provision of housing-related legal services to low-income tenants and tenant associations in neighborhoods facing strong displacement pressure.
- Provide exceptional supervision and support to a team of 5-7 housing attorneys and advocates.
- Collaborate with MRNY organizers to build, support, and represent tenant associations.
- Work closely with MRNY members and organizers to support MRNY members and organizing campaigns through strategic litigation, legislative advocacy, research, media work, and action support that strengthen MRNY’s tenant organizing.
- Provide technical legal support for MRNY’s robust housing-related policy and organizing campaigns, including drafting legislation; training other staff and members on the legal aspects of campaigns; writing reports; lobbying visits in support of policy campaigns; drafting materials (for the press, funders, the membership, elected officials, and other advocates) on our key policy campaigns and victories; responding to media inquiries; and representing MRNY at meetings with elected officials and coalition partners. 
- Coordinate community outreach, including tenant association meetings, community education efforts, including through the creation of written materials, popular education workshops, and legal clinics.
- Maintain a small docket of housing cases, including but not limited to complex holdovers, nonpayment proceedings, HP actions, Article 78 proceedings, and administrative hearings.
- Participate in team, department meetings; collaborate with external partners; and assist with tracking and highlighting cases as necessary for development and grant reporting.
- Continuous learning regarding movement lawyering (theory and application) as well as other critical concepts that underscore our organizational approach to building power, such as racialized capitalism. 
- Coordinate with the Legal Grants team and assist with grant reporting for the Housing and Benefits legal team.
- Participate in the leadership of the Legal Department to advance organizational goals and to develop and maintain strong funding relationships to sustain our housing and benefits work.
