What You’ll Do
As the Herdsman, you will lead the care and health of our livestock and act as Assistant Manager to the Farm Manager. You’ll ensure high standards in animal husbandry, supervise day-to-day livestock operations, and help coordinate farm staff.

Job Responsibilities: The Horticulture Assistant will collaborate with the Horticulture team and internal and external volunteers to maintain and enhance the plant collection in both indoor and outdoor garden spaces. This individual will assist with the care and maintenance of our plant collection, as well as help create seasonal plant exhibits and displays that engage and excite visitors. The Horticulture Assistant should demonstrate a strong passion for mission-driven community centered horticulture.
Horticulture

<li>Collaborate with the Horticulture team and volunteers to enhance and maintain collections and display</li>
<li>Adhere to the established planting and maintenance schedule for the plant collection including watering, fertilizing, seeding, propagating, transplanting, re-potting, weeding, raking, mulching, planting, sweeping, removal of garbage and general care of the plant collection and grounds.</li>
<li>Provide expert care by using appropriate horticulture techniques to care for the collection, which includes tropical plants, trees, shrubs, and plants for seasonal exhibits and displays.</li>
<li>Maintain an exceptional standard of cleanliness to ensure a healthy, thriving plant collection.</li>
<li>Collaborate with volunteers daily. This includes coordinating their daily tasks alongside the Horticulturist and Collections Manager and Horticulture Coordinator, providing hands-on support, and ensuring their ongoing positive engagement and involvement in horticultural tasks.</li>
<li>Assist with strategic planning, set up and breakdown of horticulture exhibits and events.</li>
<li>Share in the responsibility to ensure the plants are fully labeled and the conservatory is tidy and free of safety issues that will put staff, volunteers or visitors at risk.</li>
<li>Safely and properly operate equipment including golf carts, vehicles, sprayers and other gardening tools and machinery.</li>

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Aerial Lift Trimmers have no direct reports.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Prior experience in electric utility vegetation management, construction, logging, landscaping, mechanical, or military industries preferred; previous aerial lift experience preferred
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
High School diploma or education equivalent preferred
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
<ul>
<li>Must be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of all knots, ropes and rigging devices used in tree trimming and removal operations.</li>
<li>Must be able to identify tree species</li>
<li>Must be familiar with electrical hazards and appropriate operating procedures when in proximity to electrical conductors and aerial techniques in the event of an emergency aloft</li>
<li>Must be able to work and maneuver at considerable heights under varying and adverse weather conditions</li>
<li>Must possess physical strength and agility, good balance, good depth perception and the ability to hear verbal instructions from a distance.</li>
<li>Must be able to obtain and maintain first-aid certification and CPR</li>
<li>Must be able to administer and implement emergency rescue techniques, including tree rescue and all applicable first aid techniques</li>
<li>Must be able to quickly remove yourself from a potential danger area</li>
<li>Must be able to wear necessary personal protective equipment (PPE)</li>
<li>Must be able to travel out of town for storm restoration work when needed</li>

<li>Operate as an active crew member with supporting ground crew and foreman.&nbsp;</li>
<li>Perform all aspects of tree pruning and removal services safely and skillfully for clients.&nbsp;</li>
<li>&nbsp;Including but not limited to: &nbsp;</li>
<li>Pruning, thinning and removing deadwood throughout the tree canopy&nbsp;</li>
<li>Installation of cables, bracing and lightning protection systems &nbsp;</li>
<li>Removal of hazardous trees&nbsp;</li>
<li>Properly maintain, prepare and operate all tools and equipment including chainsaws, chippers, aerial lifts and more. &nbsp;</li>
