Position Title: Federal Habeas Corpus Attorney
Location: New York, NY (Remote/Hybrid options may be considered)
Employment Type: Contract (based on candidate availability)
Bar Admission: SDNY and EDNY preferred; NJ, TX, and LA jurisdictions also considered
Overview:
We are seeking an experienced attorney to support litigation involving habeas corpus petitions in federal district courts. Ideal candidates will have a strong background in federal criminal or constitutional law, with immigration experience considered a significant plus.
Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare and file habeas corpus petitions in U.S. District Courts
- Conduct legal research, draft memoranda, and argue motions
- Analyze criminal records, detention issues, and constitutional claims
- Collaborate with partner organizations, legal advocates, and stakeholders
- Represent clients in federal court proceedings and support post-conviction litigation strategies
Qualifications:
- J.D. from an accredited law school and licensed to practice law
- Admission to practice in the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York strongly preferred; candidates barred in New Jersey, Texas, or Louisiana also encouraged to apply
- Demonstrated experience filing habeas petitions in federal court
- Background in criminal law (former public defenders, AUSAs, DAs, AGs, or federal attorneys encouraged to apply)
- Immigration law experience or knowledge is a plus
- Strong analytical, writing, and oral advocacy skills
- Commitment to justice and representing underserved populations
Preferred Backgrounds:
- Former federal or state public defenders
- Former Assistant U.S. Attorneys or prosecutors
- Attorneys with experience in federal constitutional litigation or criminal appeals
