Position Overview
We are excited to invite an experienced Speech or Debate Coach to guide our rookie team at Rochester Prep High School. This part-time role is crucial in helping our students gain a competitive edge in college admissions and persistence. As a coach, you will oversee all aspects of competition, including:
- Identifying and registering for tournaments
- Securing judges and conducting tryouts
- Motivating and preparing students for success
- Keeping school leaders informed of progress
Key Responsibilities
As our Speech or Debate Coach, you will:
- Preparation & Practice Time: Dedicate up to 6 hours a week, including:
- Up to 2 hours weekly for project preparation and after-school practices
- Long-term coaching sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 1 hour each day from August to June
- At least 6 hours of practice outside school hours each week
- Competitions: Participate in at least 6 weekend tournaments over a 6-month period, including:
- Researching and identifying suitable competitions
- Registering for competitions in partnership with the Enrichment Program Manager
- Coaching and traveling with students to all competitions
- Chaperoning students to at least 2 regional/local competitions
- Family Communication: Establish a communication protocol with families, including:
- Confirming team member commitments via signed parent permission forms
- Using the Remind app to keep families updated on practices and competitions
Qualifications
We are looking for candidates who are passionate about empowering students and have:
- Experience in coaching speech or debate
- Strong organizational and communication skills
- A commitment to student success and engagement
Working Conditions
This coaching role requires flexibility and dedication, with practices and competitions primarily occurring after school and on weekends. You will report to the Enrichment Program Manager and collaborate closely with school leaders.
Compensation & Benefits
As a Speech or Debate Coach, you will receive an annual stipend ranging from $3,500 to $4,000, based on your experience and contracted hours per week, paid semi-monthly. Please note that if responsibilities are not fully completed, your stipend may be adjusted accordingly.
