Compensation: $32.50hr - $42.50/hr Based on Certification & Experience
Masonry Inspector Role Overview
The Masonry Inspector provides specialized inspection and verification services for masonry construction on Building & Infrastructure projects throughout the Greater New York City Metropolitan Area. This role supports both Quality Control (QC) and Quality Assurance (QA) programs in accordance with 1 RCNY §101-06, Chapter 17 of the NYC Building Code, the International Building Code (IBC), and applicable masonry standards.
The Masonry Inspector is responsible for verifying that masonry materials, reinforcement, placement, construction methods, and workmanship conform to approved contract documents, structural drawings, specifications, and code requirements. This includes inspection of reinforced and unreinforced masonry systems used in load-bearing and non-load-bearing applications.
This position requires an active on-site presence during masonry construction activities, including observation of reinforcing steel placement, grout placement, masonry unit installation, and associated testing. The inspector coordinates closely with contractors, construction managers, special inspectors, testing laboratories, and client representatives to ensure inspections and tests are performed at the appropriate stages of work.
The Masonry Inspector plays a critical role in ensuring structural integrity, durability, and code compliance, proactively identifying non-conforming conditions, documenting deficiencies, issuing Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs) where required, and verifying corrective actions and re-inspections.
- Work responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:
- Inspection of CMU, brick, stone, and architectural masonry installations
- Verification of reinforcing steel size, placement, spacing, and anchorage
- Observation of grout placement, consolidation, and curing
- Verification of masonry unit type, mortar, grout, and material certifications
- Inspection of anchors, embeds, lintels, and bond beams
- Work hours may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, or night shifts depending on project requirements and concrete placement schedules.
- Reporting & Documentation Requires you to:
- Prepare and submit daily inspection and test reports within required timeframe.
- Utilize client or company reporting platforms as require
- Maintain organized and auditable inspection records
Requirements
- A minimum of 3 years of experience inspecting construction work in the city of NY, varied in Size and complexity. Projects may include commercial high-rise buildings, residential towers, transportation infrastructure, utilities, institutional facilities, and public-sector construction.
- Familiarity with 101-06 and Chapter 17 of the NYC building code and the International Building Code.
- Holds OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 Certification taken within the last 5 years.
- Well versed in all aspects of construction and QA/QC responsibilities
- Familiarity with applicable Soils & Geotechnical Systems
- Training and/or knowledge in fall protection, scaffolding and ladders, & work-zone safety
- High School Diploma or Equivalent
- Physical Abilities applicable to construction projects in the City of New York and the ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and navigate active construction sites, including climbing ladders, scaffolding, and walking uneven surfaces.
- Currently holds certification as in one or more of the following:
- ICC Certification as a Structural Masonry Special Inspector
In this roll you will:
- Implement the quality assurance measures on varying construction projects.
- Review and submit all required documentation in accordance with project specifications
- Continually monitor work-in-progress
- Issue Non-Conformance Reports (NCR) where necessary.
- Conduct inspections/tests as appropriate and as required
- Coordinate all work with the General Contractor or CM
- Notify the contractor if there are deviations to the Contract documents (including Contract Design Documents)
- Document all RFIs; field coordination, issues and their resolution; deficiencies; corrective action; re-tests/inspections; deviations from the Contract Documents (including Design Drawings)
- Take a proactive approach to quality workmanship and work-in-progress
- Ensure components meet project specifications
- Practice safety in accordance with applicable and site-specific standards
Qualified professionals will also have:
- Ability to communicate with colleagues and clients of all levels
- Experience working with Microsoft Office Suite
- Ability to read and understand construction drawings & specifications
- Reliable means of transportation & valid driver’s license
- Willingness to learn
- Works well with a team and individually
- Familiarity with construction industry codes
- Mathematical Knowledge - Using mathematics to solve problems.
- Installation Oversight - Installing equipment, machines, to meet specifications.
- Equipment Selection Oversight - Determining tools and equipment needed to do a job.
- Ability to provide inspection reports in a timely manor
- Willingness to obtain additional certifications
