Position Overview:
The Maintenance and Protection of Traffic Foreman is responsible for the supervision and maintenance of traffic control devices and infrastructure.


Responsibilities:

  • Directly overseeing the work of Traffic Maintenance Workers and Semiskilled Workers in the field.
  • Ensuring that work is performed according to specified standards and within prescribed work scheduling procedures.
  • Conducting quality and quantity controls on work zones.
  • Identifying signs needing repairs due to damage and arranging for repairs or replacements.
  • Ensuring safe working conditions, equipment use, and work practices for assigned personnel and for motorists in the area.
  • Estimating time and materials needed for upcoming jobs.
  • Reading and Interpreting traffic engineering drawings.
  • Supervising the preparation of equipment and materials for each day's work.
  • Redistributing workload and available resources to solve workflow/assignment problems.
  • Understanding methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in sign installation.
  • Analyze crew cost information to ensure that the crew operates within budget.
  • Record labor and equipment hours daily for the crew.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work in various weather conditions.
  • Lift and carry heavy objects.
  • Prolonged standing, walking, and navigating NYS DOT Highway and Thruway

Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of experience as a Maintenance & Protection of Traffic Foreman
  • Certified work zone traffic supervisor is preferred
  • Able to run an MPT crew on the NYS Thruway
  • Strong understanding of quality control, cost control, job site safety, and blueprint reading.
  • Flexible schedule with rotating shifts alternating between days and nights.
  • OSHA 10-hour construction safety training, minimum requirement.
  • Good math, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Ability to teach and work alongside field crews.
  • Valid drivers license.
  • Basic knowledge of software programs, such as Heavy Job, Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint is preferred, but not required. Training on Heavy Job will be provided if needed.
