JOB SUMMARY/OBJECTIVE: Senior Engineer PLC will lead the design, programming, and integration of PLC-based control systems for baggage scanning and airport security equipment. This role is critical to ensuring the reliability, safety, and efficiency of automated baggage handling and screening systems in high-security environments such as airports and transportation hubs. This position’s specific duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:

  • Develop and document PLC functions using ladder logic diagrams and other appropriate formats.
  • Develop PLC code to meet specified requirements.
  • Document issues identified during development, unit test or system test via nonconformance process.
  • Utilize Subversion for software configuration management.
  • Participate in code, design and documentation reviews.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and IT teams to ensure seamless system integration
  • Ensure compliance with aviation safety and security standards (e.g., TSA, ICAO, IEC)
  • May include other duties as assigned and/or special projects.

QUALIFICATIONS - EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • BS in Electrical, Mechanical or Computer Engineering; or equivalent experience
  • Minimum 10 years PLC development experience
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication and teamwork skills
  • Experience developing applications with Siemens “Classic” development tools (Step-7 5.5, WinCC Flexible 2008, DriveES, Integrated Safety) and Siemens TIA Portal development tools
  • Good working knowledge of SIMATIC S7-300 or similar series hardware including ASI-Bus, ProfiBus and ProfiNet hardware; experience with the Siemens “WinAC” platform is a major plus
  • Good working knowledge of ControlNET and EtherNET/IP communications and other PLC interfaces
  • Knowledge of motor drives and VFD controllers
  • Experience with commissioning of newly-built PLC systems (Siemans or Allen Bradley platforms) and experience programming PLC for Baggage Handling Systems with EDS equipment preferred.
  • Experience with other PLC development tools such as Allen-Bradley tools is a major plus
  • Prior experience with Baggage Handling System interface protocols and integration at US (TSA) or international airports
  • Prior experience programming PLC for parcel handling or other automated conveyor and sorting systems
  • Performance monitoring and optimization experience
  • Prior development of software applications for commercial marketplace
  • Candidate must be capable of obtaining and maintaining a US government security clearance
  • Candidate must be capable of passing a background check in any country

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work will be performed in an office environment, in a laboratory environment with x-ray-based baggage screening equipment, and in customers baggage handling lines at airports world-wide.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Testing of code will require that this individual be able to travel on aircraft, stand, sit, stoop and bend.
  • Lifting of test bags during code testing of 10-80 pounds
  • Must be able to interface with a computer to develop code with tools and languages defined in this job requirement
  • Noise level in office environment will be typical of such environments. Noise level in laboratory is below 70 decibels. Work at customer sites for integration may have noise levels in excess of 70 Decibels
  • At customer sites will be required to wear company provided safety shoes, safety vests and hard hat.
