Job DescriptionCommunity Manager Position Overview

The building blocks of the Girls Write Now Collaboratory, which houses our programs and services, are Writing, Mentoring, and Community. The Community Manager (CM), a key member of the program management team, is central to all three in order to help implement the organization's strategic plan to scale while maintaining personalized supports for our members.

The Community Manager will be focused specifically on providing guidance and quality control for our customized Learning Management System, building our Mentor-On-Demand system and driving activities in a variety of formats within the college and career space. They will drive curriculum, partnerships, recruitment, engagement, and evaluation to ensure quality and impact. They will work closely with the Community Programs team and across departments from marketing and development to systems and operations, ensuring that the Girls Write Now Community has all of the resources and supports they need.

This role is instrumental to both the growth and the excellence of Girls Write Now's programs. The ideal candidate will be interested in nonprofit management and social entrepreneurship, a strategic project planner and a nurturer of individual experiences; technically minded with a high emotional IQ; a strong leader and a communicative collaborator. They will work closely with our Senior Community Managers and Directors, as well as across departments from marketing and development to systems and operations, ensuring that the Girls Write Now Community has all of the resources and supports they need.

Areas of Focus

Learning Management System

Girls Write Now has a well-rounded multi-genre, multimedia "360" curriculum built up over nearly three decades. In the past three years, we have organized and expanded upon this content in a custom-designed learning management system (LMS) on the Wordpress platform, engaging our community members in utilizing it as an anchor to their experience. The Community Manager is responsible for developing guidelines and providing quality control for the LMS, in terms of the creation of content as well as its dissemination.

Mentor on Demand Model

The Community Manager will maintain, innovate, and grow our Mentor on Demand (MOD) model, enabling flexible, goal-driven mentor-mentee sessions across college, career, creative, and wellness topics. Managing MOD’s integration with WordPress, Salesforce, and Cal.com. They will ensure seamless user experiences for mentors, mentees, corporate partners, and staff, optimizing pathways for success.

College & Career

Girls Write Now’s 360-degree approach to programming spans all genres, media, and fields, with a strong emphasis on college, career, and leadership development. We offer a writing-focused pathway into a wide range of industries, from publishing and media to health, beauty, finance, technology, and beyond. Our mentees, aged 13-24, benefit from our dedicated resources to ensure a smooth transition through college, graduate school, internships, and into careers at all levels. The Community Manager specifically focuses on enhancing the writing, community, and mentoring experiences in the college and career spaces.

Duties & Responsibilities Across Programs:

Mentor on Demand (MOD)

  • Oversee and manage Mentor On Demand (MOD) procedures to ensure efficient scheduling, communication, and support for mentors and mentees.
  • Update and improve the Mentor on Demand (MOD) model to meet the evolving needs of mentors, mentees, corporate partners, and staff on an ongoing basis.
  • Manage the integration of WordPress, Salesforce, and Cal.com to ensure smooth coordination across platforms for all MOD users.
  • Provide clear pathways for booking, engaging in, and completing MOD sessions for mentors and mentees, ensuring a seamless user experience.
  • Collaborate with corporate partners to align their goals with the MOD model and facilitate smooth interactions with participants.
  • Track and analyze user experiences, session outcomes, and guide staff to improve system performance, user engagement, and overall satisfaction.

College and Career Initiatives

  • Provide mentees with resources and opportunities to apply their writing skills across various industries, such as publishing, media, health, beauty, finance, and technology.
  • Collaborate with colleges, partners, and industry professionals to create mentorship, internship, and career development opportunities for mentees.
  • Organize and facilitate programs focused on college readiness, career exploration, and leadership development to equip mentees for success.
  • Build and maintain a supportive community where mentees can connect with mentors, peers, and professionals, while monitoring their progress and offering personalized guidance.
  • Offer personalized career coaching, resume building, and interview preparation for mentees through the MOD system to ensure they are well-prepared for professional opportunities in their chosen fields.

Learning Management System (LMS)

  • Develop and maintain comprehensive guidelines for the effective use of the LMS, ensuring alignment with Girls Write Now’s curriculum standards.
  • Collaborate with staff, mentors, and stakeholders to create engaging, high-quality content that supports the multi-genre, multimedia “360” curriculum.
  • Organize and structure LMS content in a user-friendly manner, ensuring easy navigation and access to relevant materials for mentors, mentees, and staff.
  • Provide guidance and support to LMS users, tracking engagement and progress while gathering feedback for system and content improvements.
  • Oversee the technical functionality of the LMS, ensuring it remains accessible, troubleshooting issues, and coordinating with program leads to align it with community needs.

Outreach & Recruitment

  • Manage corporate and organizational partner engagement by fostering relationships with HR professionals, maintaining communication, and ensuring active collaboration.
  • Reach out to organizations and partners to recruit mentees and mentors, building strong connections to expand the GWN community.
  • Coordinate open houses to introduce prospective mentors to GWN’s mission, programs, and opportunities.
  • Plan and execute enrollment-focused marketing strategies to attract new mentees and mentors.
  • Identify and pursue new recruitment opportunities to grow and diversify the GWN community.
  • Represent GWN at external or partner events to bring greater visibility to the GWN brand by engaging with potential participants and supporters.

Participant Enrollment & Onboarding

  • Contribute to the design of program applications and onboarding materials.
  • Review mentee and mentor applications and conduct mentor and mentee interviews.
  • Work closely with the Systems department to align enrollment procedures with GWN systems.
  • Ensure safety protocols are being adhered to, distribute orientation materials, and conduct onboarding training.

Community Engagement

  • Produce key events to boost engagement, foster leadership, and support enrollment.
  • Review feedback from event surveys to ensure that events meet program objectives and are well facilitated.
  • Connect regularly with facilitators to discuss performance and provide feedback.
  • Manage and operate GWN’s hybrid event technology in the office to ensure seamless virtual, hybrid, and in-person experiences.
  • Assist other departments or the production of special events as needed.

Pair Management

  • Serve as an individual Staff Lead, navigating and supporting a cohort of ~30 mentee/mentor pairs in the mentorship program.
  • Work closely with the Systems department team to develop practical administrative systems that aid with pair management.
  • Develop and communicate effective policies, procedures, and tools for Staff Leads to follow and utilize.
  • Manage and advise mentor-mentee relationships to foster positive interactions between staff and the GWN community, and track pair progress toward program completion.

Curriculum Development

  • Participate in weekly Journey Management meetings and contribute to the planning and design of curriculum.
  • Design and lead educational programs that engage and empower participants.
  • Build, design, and maintain journey courses in Girls Write Now’s learning management system.
  • Conduct comprehensive reviews of courses in the Learning Management System to ensure content accuracy, engagement, and alignment with educational standards.
  • Build and design Journey and Event webpages to inform and engage prospective participants.

Program Development & Evaluation

  • Co-develop feedback surveys as evaluation tools to help understand the impact of different programming components and the experience of the GWN community within these.
  • Review and analyze survey data to assess program alignment with strategic goals and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Co-generate data-driven ideas and solutions regarding improvements for the GWN Collaboratory and community experience in alliance with other staff.
  • Support the development, testing, and implementation of the LMS and portal to enhance program quality.
  • Implement and evaluate improvements throughout the program to ensure satisfactory experiences for staff and the community.
  • Incorporate reflective practices and tools for social-emotional learning and well-being into all program initiatives.

Qualifications & Skills

A successful candidate is systems-oriented with strong project management, technical skills, and track record of building partnerships with different entities, experience working with youth, a creative drive, and collaborative, and problem-solving mindset. They are goal-oriented, able to meet deadlines, and focused on deliverables—while demonstrating flexibility, positivity, and adapting to new priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Preferred candidates have:

  • Bachelor's degree in education, arts administration, nonprofit management, educational technology, or a related field (Master’s degree preferred)
  • Are eligible to work in the United States and not require visa sponsorship.
  • A successful track record of building partnerships with stakeholders at different levels to support organizational goals, and potentially fundraising.
  • A minimum of five years of professional work experience developing and executing programmatic, marketing, and fundraising initiatives at a nonprofit, NGO, or at social enterprise.
  • A minimum of five years experience in education program development, literacy education, curriculum writing, pedagogy, and program evaluation.
  • Demonstrated administrative, technological, and project management skills.
  • Maturity and ability to collaborate and communicate effectively
  • Experience working in a matrixed work environment.
  • Must be available to work occasional Saturdays and evenings as the program calendar demands.

Compensation & Benefits

Girls Write Now offers a competitive compensation package.
Annual salary: $70,000-80,000 depending on qualifications and experience.
