JOB SUMMARY:
The Academic Coach will provide effective, regular, responsive, and proactive academic and personal support to high-risk and other undergraduate nursing students from enrollment through graduation. The role involves helping students develop essential academic skills and behaviors, identify and overcome obstacles, build self-efficacy, and take ownership of their educational journey. The coach collaborates with faculty and other university offices to ensure integrated support for timely degree completion.
ACADEMIC COACH ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Conduct one-on-one meetings with students to develop essential academic skills/behaviors that will enable them to manage their academic transition to college and maximize their success. Areas of focus include time management, organization, goal setting, active learning, study skills, preparing for tests, and other student success skills and strategies.
- Monitor academic progress of students utilizing available university information and feedback from faculty and, as needed, intervene with resources and support.
- Connect students with university and community resources who may be experiencing academic and personal issues which may be affecting academic performance. University resources include but are not limited to Peer Tutoring, Writing Center, Accessibility Services, Counseling, Health Services, etc., as well as the College of Nursing Resilience and Resource Officer.
- Partner with key university departments to plan, develop, and offer specialized workshops at key times during the academic year which enhance student preparation and success.
- Provide information and guidance for students during the pre-registration process to ensure they understand how the nursing program may impact course scheduling, CON requirements related to academic standards, progression, and graduation, and general education requirements.
- Communicate with undergraduate nursing students throughout their academic experience providing them with timely information (e.g., department/college policies and procedures) and offering support, as needed.
- Maintain detailed coaching meeting notes and attendance for students and prepare reports for the supervisor in accordance with grant expectations.
- Attend and participate in Nursing and Academic Success Center department meetings.
- Maintain confidentiality of information (including but not limited to: student and employee personal information, student grades, etc.), both during and after employment with the University. Any question regarding the confidentiality of material, should be referred to the supervisor. Any violation shall subject the employee to disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
% of Time
- 75%: Provide direct support to identified student populations and maintain appropriate records of support provided.
- 20%: Serve as a liaison between faculty, resilience officer, tutors, and students.
- 5%: Attend ASC and Nursing department meetings.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of intervention techniques for at-risk college students, specifically nursing students.
- Willingness to learn NCLEX-RN examination expectations.
- Be detail-oriented, organized, and able to manage administrative tasks including conducting both formal and informal assessments throughout the year.
- Excellent oral, written, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work well with a variety of constituencies in a college and university environment.
- Ability to interpret high school transcripts and various student data related to at-risk students.
- Proficiency using a computer and various types of software including Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook and the Internet as well as other office machines with or without accommodation.
- Ability to respond to inquiries received through a variety of means (telephone, email, etc.) with or without accommodation.
- Ability to work nontraditional business hours as needed.

ACADEMIC COACH ERGONOMIC REQUIREMENTS:
The functions of the position are usually performed sitting, but may require some amount of time standing. Some amount of stooping, kneeling, bending, crouching, lifting, walking, carrying, and other movements may be required. Tasks involve working on a computer keyboard and using computer software applications and a calculator that involve extensive wrist and hand movements. All individuals are required to be able to perform these movements without significant risk of injury to themselves or others.
QUALIFICATION STANDARDS:
- Master's Degree in Education or related field is required.
- One to three years of experience with academic advising, coaching, and/or mentoring at the university-level is preferred; experience working with at-risk college populations is preferred.
- Candidate must be a self-starter and possess a thorough understanding of academic support theory and best practices; have an understanding of the needs of a diverse college student population.
- Exhibit excellent verbal and oral communication skills.
- Candidate must be detail-oriented, organized, and able to manage administrative tasks including conducting both formal and informal assessments throughout the year.
- Excellent judgment and respect for confidentiality.
- A valid New York State driver's license is required that satisfies both University and insurance company underwriting rules and regulations for driving a motor vehicle.
