The Bowery Mission is a Christian, faith-based organization committed since the 1870s to serving people experiencing homelessness, hunger, and poverty. The Bowery Mission meets essential needs and creates transformative community with men, women, children, and families in New York so that we can together overcome homelessness and poverty and flourish.


The Bowery Mission is a holistic, Christian faith-based organization dedicated to serving people experiencing homelessness, hunger, and poverty. The Ambassador role is a key member of the Clinical Services team focused on creating welcoming and trust-building relationships with guests. The Ambassador team invites guests to choose help by responding to immediate needs and connecting men and women to The Bowery Missions day center and compassionate care services (clothing, shelter, medical care, etc.) and external referrals. Ambassadors utilize Motivational Interviewing to conduct needs assessments and to introduce guests to social workers and the next steps toward independent living. Ambassadors engage with guests in a variety of services and spaces, including but not limited to the following: front desk reception, meal service, clothing, and mobile shower programs, mobile medical clinic, and other day center activities.



Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Welcome guests and build name-knowing trust-based relationships with assigned caseload.
  • Assist with check-in process, explain types of services, and connect clients to relevant services.
  • Provide orientation of building and services, such as meals, showers, emergency medical services. Distribute toiletries and other items to meet guests physical needs.
  • Using Motivational Interviewing skills, assist guests (as ready) to complete Needs Assessment and gather relevant demographic information to support psychosocial and intake assessments.
  • Maintain in-depth knowledge of services, resources, and procedures to assist guests and other staff in best next steps.
  • Foster a team environment and utilize NCI training to assist in responding to crisis or conflict. Work across teams to help ensure excellent services.
  • Register all guests and carry out administrative duties needed to maintain accurate and current client information, support excellent service, and meet reporting requirements.


Work Schedule:

Shift: Sun. Thu.10:30a 7:00p (Fri./Sat. Off)


Requirements:

  • Embraces the organizations Statement of Faith.
  • 3 years in ministry, non-profit, or human services with strong customer service experience or ability.
  • Bachelors degree in psychology or other relevant area preferred, or a combination of education and additional work experience.
  • Trauma-Informed Care. Knowledge of population served.

Preferred:

  • Certified in Mental Health First Aid.
  • Certified in Non-violent Crisis Intervention.
  • Certified in Motivational Interviewing.
  • First Aid/CPR.
  • Naloxone Training.


Salary: $20.67per hour
