Oncology Pharmacy Technician - Full-Time Days

Pharmacy Technicians/Oncology assist pharmacists in preparing and distributing chemotherapy/medications, maintaining drug inventory, and maintaining patient records in the Cayuga Cancer Center pharmacy. They have additional training in compounding sterile medications both hazardous and non-hazardous, in the efficient management of inventory for an infusion pharmacy, and in administrative processes that supports the supervising oncology pharmacist and Cancer Center staff and maintain competencies for both hazardous and non-hazardous compounding per regulations. Their increased exposure to hazardous agents requires advanced training and as such their role is more specialized than the other pharmacy technician roles in CHS. Pharmacy Technicians/Oncology participate in Investigation Drug studies and research and maintain competencies with the requirements of study protocols. They work only under the supervision of a registered pharmacist. They do not perform duties that can legally be performed only by a registered pharmacist.


Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Procures, distributes, and replenishes medications per physician or pharmacist requests, ensuring compliance with policies and protocols.
  • Maintains perpetual inventory by evaluating upcoming treatments and ordering necessary medications and supplies.
  • Prepares, labels, and packages medications, including sterile pharmaceutical compounds, for pharmacist verification, adhering to USP <797> and <800> guidelines.
  • Operates and maintains sterile compounding equipment, including vertical and horizontal laminar flow hoods.
  • Performs dosage calculations and ensures accurate preparation of solutions.
  • Manages inventory, including restocking medications, rotating stock, and handling hazardous drugs.
  • Maintains accurate records, logs, and documentation in compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Supports Investigational Drug studies, including dispensing, storage, distribution, and training per protocol guidelines.
  • Ensures a clean and compliant sterile compounding environment and is flexible in floating between oncology pharmacies or assuming additional responsibilities as needed.


Required Skills and Experience:

  • Education - High School diploma/equivalent.
  • Experience - 1-3 years of sterile preparation experience in the hospital or infusion clinic setting is required.
  • Certification and Licensure - New York State licensure for Registered Pharmacy Technician.


Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Sterile preparation of hazardous medications is preferred
  • At least 1 year experience in Investigational Drug studies or clinical research is preferred.
  • Compounded Sterile Preparation Technician Certification (CSPT), or Advanced Certified Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT-Adv) is preferred but not required.


Physical Requirements:

  • Repetitive use of hands and fingers (e.g., use of computer keyboard); may require lifting and carrying light loads (up to 40 lbs.), including boxes, equipment, unit-dose cassettes, and IV solutions and stooping and kneeling (e.g., to pick up items from the floor, to remove and replace items on lower shelves, and to file documents in lower file drawers); sitting, walking, or standing for long periods of time (4-8 hours) is often necessary; must be able physically to operate the equipment used for the job.


Location and Travel Requirements:

  • Location: Onsite Cayuga Park - 401 Cayuga Park Lane, Suite 300, Ithaca NY 14850
  • Shift: Days. Monday - Friday 7:30am to 4pm
  • Travel: 0% - 5% local area travel can be expected in this role


Compensation Disclosure:

  • $19.23 to $24.04 per hour
