Associate General Counsel
Location: Long Beach, New York (On-site)
Salary: $170,000 – $190,000 + Benefits
Our client is a New York-based national property and casualty insurance group with multiple subsidiaries. The company provides a range of insurance services and is committed to upholding the highest standards of regulatory compliance, operational governance, and stakeholder engagement. As they continue to evolve and strengthen their legal and compliance capabilities, we are now seeking an Associate General Counsel to join their team.
This is a critical in-house position focusing on regulatory compliance, corporate governance, and insurance-related legal matters, including state filings, licensing, and contracts.
Key Requirements
We are seeking a highly experienced legal professional with deep expertise in insurance regulation and corporate governance within the insurance sector.
Essential qualifications and experience:
- Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school
- A minimum of 7 years of experience in insurance law, with a focus on regulatory compliance and corporate governance
- Active Bar Admission – preference given to New York State
- Direct experience preparing and submitting regulatory filings, licensing, and approvals across multiple states
- Strong working knowledge of:
- Insurance Department regulations
- Reinsurance
- Agency agreements
- Related party agreements
- Familiarity with board governance processes, state compliance matters, and legal operations within insurance companies
- Excellent communication, negotiation, and relationship-building skills
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple legal matters across jurisdictions and departments
- Experience working in-house for an insurance carrier or within a corporate legal department is essential
Role & Responsibilities
This is a hands-on role where you will be embedded within the business, offering critical legal guidance to the executive and operations teams across a wide range of activities. Your core responsibilities will include:
- Providing legal advice on insurance-related matters including underwriting, claims handling, reinsurance, and regulatory compliance
- Monitoring changes in insurance legislation, case law, and industry regulations, and advising internal stakeholders accordingly
- Managing all aspects of corporate governance, including Board of Directors activities, state compliance, and internal operations
- Leading the preparation and submission of regulatory filings, applications, and state-by-state compliance documentation
- Supporting the business in its interactions with outside counsel, particularly in relation to investment matters
- Advising on and reviewing contracts and agreements with affiliated entities and external partners
