Job Title: Water Safety Instructor (WSI)
Department: Aquatics
Location: South Troy Pool
Reports to: Pool Coordinator
Salary: $20 an hour
Classification: Part-time, Seasonal (June-September 1)
Hours & Schedule: 9:30am-12:30pm, Monday to Friday, two-week sessions for six weeks total (10-12 hours per week)

Overview of Your Role
The primary function of the Water Safety Instructor will be to deliver American Red Cross Learn to Swim courses to the community, ranging from ages 6 months to adults, teaching lifesaving water safety knowledge and skills, and maintaining accurate records. This is a seasonal position available during the summer months.
KEY ROLES (Essential Job Responsibilities):
- Conduct Red Cross Swim Lessons according to Red Cross Standards and guidelines.
- Evaluate swimmers' progress and create supportive lesson plans to promote positive and safe swimming practices.
- Ensure all teaching equipment, such as life jackets, toys, etc. are readily available and in good condition.
- Maintain accurate records and documentation, including participant progress logs, attendance records, Learn to Swim Achievement Books, and Red Cross Course Record Entries.
- Promote water safety by educating pool guests about the rules, proper pool behavior, and general water safety guideline.s
- Communicate effectively with guests, coworkers, and supervisors to ensure a positive and efficient work environment.
- Attend required staff meetings and training.
- Complete swim requirements as assigned
- Additional duties as assigned by supervisor
Work environment:
Outdoor swimming pool facility with exposure to various weather conditions including heat, sun, and occasional light rain.
Requirements:
CREDENTIALS, SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:Education and Experience:
- Must be at least 15 years of age
- Previous experience teaching swim lessons preferred but not required
Required Certifications:
- American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification (can be provided, training rate @ $15.75/hour)
- CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid certifications
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Strong swimming skills and water safety knowledge
- Excellent communication and instruction skills
- Ability to work effectively with children and adults of various ages and abilities
- Good organizational skills and attention to detail for maintaining accurate records
- Patience and ability to create a positive learning environment
- Must pass a comprehensive background check, including fingerprinting, child abuse clearance, and sex offender registry check, as required by BGCCA.
Physical Requirements: This position requires extended periods of standing, walking, and demonstrating swimming techniques in an outdoor aquatic setting. The ability to work in varying weather conditions (heat, sun, light rain) is necessary.
