Mental Health Therapy Aide
Location - Syracuse, NY
Position Overview
We are seeking Mental Health Therapy Aides to support patients in a Behavioral Health inpatient setting. This role provides both direct and indirect patient care, working closely with the nursing and clinical team to ensure patient safety, therapeutic engagement, and high-quality care. Pediatric experience is preferred, and psychiatric experience is required.

Key Responsibilities
-
Provide direct and indirect patient care in an acute behavioral health setting.

Take and record vital signs accurately and in a timely manner.
-
Assist with patient admissions, documentation, and physical examinations.

Collect specimens and monitor patient intake and output.
-
Transport patients safely within the facility.
-
Orient new patients to unit rules, routines, and expectations.

Assist patients with activities of daily living (ADLs), including hygiene needs.
-
Develop therapeutic relationships under nursing supervision.

Interact therapeutically with patients during structured and unstructured activities.
-
Intervene appropriately during crisis situations to maintain patient and staff safety.

Perform safety checks as required during assigned shifts.

Observe, document, and report patient responses to treatments and interventions.

Maintain a safe, structured, and supportive environment for patients.

Apply age-appropriate clinical and psychological interventions based on developmental stage.

Participate in unit activities related to nursing operations and patient care coordination.

Utilize Electronic Medical Records (EMR) accurately and consistently.
Required Qualifications
-
Current CPR certification
-
Minimum 1 year of experience required (2 years preferred)
-
Psychiatric or behavioral health experience required
-
Strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills
-
Ability to work effectively with patients, families, and interdisciplinary healthcare teams
-
Ability to perform patient care duties with minimal supervision after orientation
-
Experience working in an inpatient healthcare setting preferred
-
Experience using Electronic Medical Records (EMR)
Preferred Qualifications
-
Pediatric behavioral health experience
-
Prior inpatient behavioral health or acute care experience
-
Strong understanding of patient safety and crisis intervention techniques
Required & Desired Skills

Behavioral or mental health field experience (highly desired – 2 years)

Medical terminology knowledge (highly desired)

Effective therapeutic communication
