Job Overview:

The Transmission Planning Engineer will leverage expertise in electrical transmission planning and grid technologies to evaluate and enhance grid performance, addressing future challenges such as plant retirements and renewable energy integration. This role involves conducting a variety of transmission and operational studies and providing consulting services to help clients make informed decisions based on comprehensive business and engineering analyses. The engineer will contribute to the execution of technical studies and collaborate with project managers to ensure successful project delivery.

Key Responsibilities:

    • Conduct power flow, transient stability, transfer capability, short-circuit, voltage analysis, harmonics analysis, electromagnetic, reliability, and economic dispatch studies.
    • Evaluate and manage congestion scenarios through detailed analysis.
    • Assess regulatory conditions and risks by applying NERC, FERC, and Regional requirements, policies, and procedures.
    • Utilize production costing, risk assessment techniques, TPL compliance, and generator interconnection principles.
    • Perform transmission system planning studies using industry-standard software (e.g., PSS/E, PSLF, EMTP/ATP, PSCAD, SKM, ETAP, Promod).
    • Independently evaluate, select, adapt, and modify standard engineering techniques for planning procedures and criteria.
    • Analyze engineering, financial, and economic data to derive technical business implications for client projects.
    • Develop and incorporate technical assumptions for life-cycle cost analysis, including capital costs, O&M costs, performance estimates, and economic forecasts.
    • Conduct risk assessments evaluating impacts of regulatory rules.
    • Develop detailed financial analyses using various computer-based tools.
    • Prepare technical reports and presentations summarizing analysis results.
    • Develop client presentations, engineering reviews, financial analyses, and contract administration for utility system design/planning.
    • Assist project managers in business development activities, including proposal development and maintaining client relationships.
    • Support business lines as required by clients.
    • Perform other assigned duties.
    • Ensure compliance with all company policies and standards.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
  • Proven experience in electrical transmission planning and grid technology applications.
  • Proficiency in industry software such as PSS/E, PSLF, EMTP/ATP, PSCAD, SKM, ETAP, and Promod.
  • Strong understanding of NERC, FERC, and Regional requirements and compliance.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Effective communication skills for developing technical reports and presentations.
  • Experience in financial analysis and risk assessment related to engineering projects.
