Job Title: Career Mentor, Work Plus

Job Summary: 

CASES is seeking an energetic, independent, and culturally competent Career Mentor for our Work Plus incentive-based job readiness program. Focused on serving young adults ages 16–24 living in Central Harlem, the Work Plus Career Mentor will provide intensive employment support and career coaching to youth who are not currently enrolled in school or employed. The Career Mentor plays a pivotal role in creating pathways to sustainable employment and reducing justice system involvement through life skills development, community engagement, and individualized mentorship.

CASES keeps people out of jail and prison by engaging them with effective services that help them succeed in the community. We specialize in serving youth and young adults in criminal justice and neighborhood-based programs. This position is looking for an independent self-starter to be a Career Coach for an incentivebased job readiness program for young adults that live in Central Harlem.

Services are expected to be done in person – at the office and/or in the community.

Salary: The salary for the Work Plus Career Mentor position is $60,000 per year. 

Shift Hours: The Work Plus Career Mentor position is full time from Monday through Friday 9am to 5pm. 

Location Address: 4 West 125th Street, New York, N.Y. 10027 (Throughout Harlem and as needed)

Workplace Flexibility:Flexible; Positions for which staff have flexibility to complete their workday from home or another suitable space, typically after reporting to the office and/or engaging in field or community-based work. 

What you will be doing: 

  • Recruit 17 participants by March of each fiscal year from the local Central Harlem catchment area, particularly focusing on youth and young adults who are not in school and/or not employed.
  • Develop and maintain partnerships with referral sources, including local Cure Violence partner Street Corner Resources.
  • Engage with community partners and stakeholders to deepen our relationship with the community and support employment, internship and community service opportunities for participants.
  • Facilitate job readiness and life skills groups.
  • Conduct individual case management and career readiness sessions with participants.
  • Process bi-weekly payroll via database with all backup documentation.
  • Meet all contractual outcomes and coordinate services with a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Plan and execute employment events including, but not limited to, field trips, career panels, information interviews, mock interviews, etc.
  • Maintain up-to-date documentation in databases.
  • Attend provider meetings as scheduled.
  • Help ensure we maintain a safe working environment by reporting any hazards or unsafe conditions, e.g., liquid spill in hallway, to the appropriate facilities staff member or supervisor. 
  • Other duties as assigned by Team Leader or Sr. Director of Education Career and Enrichment Services.

What we are looking for: 

  • 2 years of work with youth and/or young adults;
  • High School Diploma and/or GED/HSE
  • Experience working with justice involved and/or opportunity youth
  • Strong communication skills, both written and oral
  • Experience developing relationships with external partners
  • Commitment to active youth engagement
  • Trained in or committed to learning and utilizing trauma informed approaches as a means of engaging young people

Additional, preferred skills we are looking for but are not required: 

  • Strong preference for residence and community ties to Harlem
