Position Summary

The Senior Director of Learning & Development (SDL&D) will lead the design, implementation, and quality assurance of all instructional and curriculum-related functions across OBT’s workforce and education programs. This role ensures that instructional services are high quality, trauma-informed, industry-aligned, and responsive to the evolving social-emotional needs of our diverse participant population. The SDL&D is a core member of the Executive Team and works closely with both Co-CEOs, program leadership, and employer partners to ensure that learning drives impact and economic mobility for our participants.

Key Responsibilities

Curriculum Design & Instructional Leadership

  • Lead the development, contextualization, and continuous improvement of curricula across workforce programs, including work readiness, digital literacy, and sector-based training.

  • In collaboration with the Co-CEO of Mission Advancement, embed industry-informed and community-responsive practices by integrating real-time feedback from employer partners and local stakeholders into instructional design.

  • Develop and articulate OBT’s instructional philosophy rooted in workforce readiness, equity, trauma-informed practices, and learner-centered design; ensure consistent implementation and fidelity across all instructional sites.

  • Drive innovation in instructional practices through piloting new tools, integrating emerging youth development and adult education methodologies, and scaling successful strategies agency-wide.

Program Quality Assurance

  • Implement a robust instructional quality framework including classroom observations, lesson plan reviews, and feedback loops.

  • Use data to identify instructional trends, support continuous improvement, and address participant learning gaps.

  • Lead performance evaluations and professional development plans for instructional staff.

  • Partner with the Chief Impact Officer to support data-informed decision making on participant outcomes.

Staff Supervision & Capacity Building

  • Directly supervise and support educational and work readiness instructors to ensure high-quality, workforce-aligned instruction across all programs.

  • Develop and lead professional learning communities and Communities of Practice that promote collaboration, reflection, and continuous improvement.

  • Facilitate ongoing training on culturally responsive pedagogy, trauma-informed practices, and differentiated instruction, while ensuring staff remain informed on labor market trends, employer expectations, and sector-specific developments to keep instruction relevant and impactful.

Program Collaboration, Partnerships & Integration

  • Collaborate with the Director of Workforce, Program Directors, CIO, and case management team leaders to align instruction with employer needs and client support services.

  • Manage training partnerships with higher education institutions and external providers, including Greenwood, CUNY, and others to ensure curriculum alignment, credential attainment, and learning outcomes meet both participant needs and OBT’s mission.

  • Support ongoing collaboration with the Department of Education (DOE), working closely with the Senior Director for Advance & Earn to align instructional strategy with school-year initiatives and youth-focused learning goals.

  • Serve as a bridge between program design and frontline instruction to ensure participant-centered, holistic service delivery.

Preferred Qualifications & Experience

  • 5+ years of experience in instructional leadership, adult education, or workforce training environments.

  • Demonstrated expertise in curriculum development and contextualized instruction for underserved communities.

  • Experience supervising and coaching instructional staff and using data to drive quality improvements.

  • Ability to navigate cross-functional teams and manage up/down/across with confidence and clarity.

  • Deep commitment to OBT’s mission of equity, inclusion, and economic mobility.

Key Performance Metrics

  • Curriculum is implemented with 90% fidelity across all programs.

  • 100% of instructional staff receive professional development tied to performance goals.

  • At least 80% of participants demonstrate measurable gains in instructional assessments.

  • Quarterly instructional quality audits completed and reviewed with Executive Team.

  • Participant satisfaction with instructional delivery remains at or above 85%

  • Employer partner satisfaction with the demonstrated work readiness skills of participants placed for internship or employment achieves 85% or better.

    Salary Range: $85-90,000
