POSITION: Assistant Golf Course Superintendent

DEPARTMENT: Parks and Grounds

DATE: July 2025

BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Working supervisor responsible for the maintenance of assigned areas on the golf course and other selected areas as required. These areas to include but not limited to: lawns at Mountain Rest Golf Course, guest cottage lawns, and the Bonticou lodge area. Additionally, this includes the facilities and equipment used by the golf course maintenance staff.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Oversee and supervise golf course staff to ensure task completion.
  • Work with staff to maintain the integrity and playability of the golf course and its environment including greens, fairways, roughs, practice greens, lawns, walkways, ornamental plantings, trees, shrubs, etc.
  • Keep up to date on latest technology concerning turf management and related topics, and apply pesticides as needed on the course.
  • Coordinate use, maintenance, and repair of all golf course vehicles and equipment with Golf Course Superintendent and other staff.
  • Provide maintenance and supervisory coverage in the absence of the Superintendent.
  • Ensure safety of guests, employees and self, anywhere on the property. Adhere to all safety rules and regulations and wear safety equipment as required by Mohonk Mountain House.
  • Wear Proper Protective Equipment when performing tasks that recommend such equipment.
  • Assist the Superintendent in the preparation and planning of golf course projects, special tasks and programs, i.e. Audubon
  • Work with the Golf Shop staff, other departments and special groups (leagues, etc.) to ensure guest satisfaction with our facilities.
  • Maintain golf course inventories of equipment, tools, and supplies. Communicate needs to supervisor.
  • Maintain current turf grass, plant knowledge, technical updates, and provide support for our IPM program.
  • Maintain and repair trees, shrubs, roads, and sand traps after major weather events and on a daily basis.
  • Control invasive plants in naturalized areas with manual weeding and other control methods in order to keep them playable while providing forage and safety for pollinators and other wildlife.
  • Learn irrigation system including but not limited to repairs, winterization, start up, and programming.
  • Assist in adhering to a fertilization schedule for turf to keep a vigorous and lush playing surface.
  • Maintain order on job site and within the golf course storage areas.
  • Assist with regular activities and arrangements for special occasions.
  • Learn and maintain a basic level of horticultural and plant knowledge. Maintain all certifications/attend and pass Cornell Turfgrass Program.
  • Interact with fellow staff and guests in a professional, courteous method.
  • Monitor the safe use of the Mountain Rest Golf Course and advise players of appropriate behavior.
  • Positively influence staff morale and exemplify a cooperative attitude.
  • Support other departments in the completion of related tasks.
  • Support all Mohonk Mountain House programs and policies.
  • Present a neat, clean, and well-groomed appearance in accordance with the Mohonk Mountain House Dress and Grooming Standards.
  • Learn and successfully demonstrate the Mohonk Mountain House Service Steps with Service Strategies with guests and staff.
  • Learn and retain knowledge of historical facts and information about Mohonk Mountain House.
  • Speak, read and write the English language and communicate in a clear and congenial manner, with our guests, visitors and employees. Hear verbal instructions, directions and warnings.
  • Reach with hands and arms, bend, kneel, stoop, twist and flex arms, walk up and down stairs/inclines, sit, climb up/down ladders or stand for up to 5 hours at a time.
  • Lift up to 100 pounds from ground level to 36 inches with/ without assistance, lift up to 50 pounds from ground level to overhead, carry up to 100 feet with or without assistance. Walk up to 7 miles per day.
  • Maneuver carts or dollies safely with loads up to 200 pounds up and down stairs, elevators, through passageways or outdoors up to 75 feet.
  • See close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Identify and distinct between colors as to recognize visual indicators concerning golf course and plant health needs.
  • Act calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Analyze problems and develop and implement action plans to address problems.
  • Work outdoors and expose self to natural elements including rain, heat, wind, weather extremes, pollen, and insects.
  • Maintain a flexible work schedule including days/nights, weekdays/weekends, holidays, and during peak periods of business.
  • Work with Superintendent and staff to ensure coverage on daily basis throughout the week.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Valid Driver’s License and at least 21 years of age, or 20 years of age with at least two years of licensed driving experience.
  • Turfgrass Management Certification or 3 years of progressive experience in golf course maintenance preferred.
  • Previous landscaping experience preferred.
