We are seeking a dedicated andcompassionate Peer Counselor to join the Mobile Crisis Team (MCT) within the CommunityPsychiatry Emergency Program (CPEP) based in Brooklyn, NY. As a critical memberof a multidisciplinary team, the Peer Counselor brings lived experience inmental health and/or substance use recovery to support and engage patients intreatment and community services.
This role combines fieldwork withadministrative responsibilities and requires a high level of empathy,collaboration, and professionalism. The Peer Counselor reports directly to the ProgramCoordinator, CPEP Manager, and Medical Director of Community Psychiatry.
Compensation: $19.31 -$20.08 Per Hour
Key Responsibilities:
- Partner with clinical staff (Social Workers, Nurse Practitioners, Physicians, etc.) to provide field-based crisis interventions and support
- Transport clinical team members to patient homes or community locations for psychiatric evaluations
- Utilize lived experience to engage patients in services, foster trust, and reduce stigma
- Assist with follow-up care and outreach to previously evaluated patients to promote treatment compliance and connection to community services
- Coordinate and schedule psychiatric assessments based on referrals from community sources
- Use EPIC to document patient interactions and maintain accurate clinical records
- Maintain weekly statistical and demographic data for performance improvement and reporting
- Provide light clerical support, including faxing, copying, and assisting clinicians in emergent situations (e.g., 911 interventions)
- Act as a bridge between patients and providers, ensuring that patients feel heard, supported, and encouraged in their recovery journey
Requirements:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Peer Counseling Certification
- Valid New York State Driver’s License with clean driving record
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a consumer-focused setting, preferably with individuals experiencing psychiatric or substance use challenges
- Proficiency in basic computer and data entry skills (experience with EPIC preferred)
- Experience working on a Mobile Crisis Team or in an emergency psychiatric setting
