About the PositionWe're seeking a dynamic and versatile General Manager to join our small but growing team at the Stonewall National Monument Visitor Center (SNMVC) in New York City. This role is crucial in maintaining the first LGBTQ+ visitor center within the National Park Service.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage daily operations of the SNMVC, including creating and maintaining staff schedules, supervising staff performance, ensuring cleanliness and functionality of the space, and troubleshooting operational issues as they arise. Develop and implement standard operating procedures for safety, security, and efficiency.
- Prepare, monitor, and report on operational budgets. Maintain accurate financial records, ensure appropriate allocation of funds, and oversee expenses in alignment with organizational policies.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for security and emergency situations, maintaining and enforcing all established safety protocols. Remain on-call during operating hours and outside hours as needed for urgent matters.
- Oversee and manage merchandise creative, planning, ordering, and sales in partnership with vendors and community partners.
- Manage and coordinate all internal and external events hosted at the SNMVC, including logistics, staffing, vendor communication, and space readiness before and after each event.
- Serve as day-to-day on-site liaison with the National Parks Service and National Park Rangers assigned to the Stonewall National Monument.
- Lead volunteer recruitment, training, and management.
- Ensure compliance with lease terms, regulations, and safety standards.
- Manage the visitor experience, including exhibits and installations, events, and retail operations.
- Collaborate on fundraising initiatives and community outreach programs.
- Handle basic facility maintenance and vendor management.
- Provide direct supervision and support to all Visitor Center staff, ensuring adherence to policies and procedures and maintaining a consistently high standard of customer experience.
- Ensure daily opening and closing procedures are consistently followed and documented, and that the site is ready for public access each morning and properly secured at closing.
- Perform additional duties as required.
Qualifications

- 3-5 years of experience in sales, and operations management, preferably in a nonprofit, museum, or visitor center setting.
- Strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
- Proficiency in budget management and basic financial reporting.
- Familiarity with POS systems and retail operations.
- Passion for LGBTQ+ rights and social justice.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays.
- Bachelor's degree preferred, or equivalent experience.
Physical Requirements

- Ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 30 pounds.
- Comfortable working in various weather conditions (indoor and outdoor).
- This is an on-site, full-time position that requires a consistent presence at the SNMVC five days a week, including availability during operating hours, special events, and holidays, as business needs dictate. The role requires a high degree of visibility and leadership within the space.
Compensation

- Salary range: $90,000 - $110,000, based on experience.
- PTO and paid holidays included.

Location

- On-site at the Stonewall National Monument Visitor Center, New York City.
- No remote work option is available for this position.
