Position Overview:
The Housing Specialist is responsible for assisting clients in securing and maintaining stable, permanent housing. Working closely with case managers, shelter staff, and community partners, the Housing Specialist will navigate housing resources, build landlord relationships, and support clients through the application, placement, and retention process. The ideal candidate will have strong knowledge of housing programs, excellent interpersonal skills, and a commitment to helping individuals overcome barriers to housing stability.
Key Responsibilities:

Conduct housing assessments to determine clients’ eligibility and readiness for permanent housing.

Assist clients in completing housing applications, gathering documentation, and navigating housing-related processes.

Identify and maintain a database of available housing options, including supportive housing, affordable rentals, and market-rate units.

Build and maintain positive relationships with landlords, brokers, and property managers to expand housing opportunities.

Advocate for clients with landlords and housing authorities to address barriers such as credit issues, rental history, or criminal background.

Educate clients on tenants’ rights, lease agreements, and housing responsibilities to promote long-term stability.

Coordinate with case managers, legal services, and benefits providers to address any issues that could jeopardize housing placement or retention.

Monitor and follow up with housed clients to ensure ongoing stability and provide interventions as needed to prevent eviction.

Maintain accurate records of housing placements, contacts, and case notes in accordance with agency and funding requirements.

Stay informed about changes to housing laws, subsidy programs, and local housing market trends.
Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Human Services, or a related field preferred

High School Diploma required

Prior experience in housing placement, property management, or working with homeless populations strongly preferred.

Knowledge of local, state, and federal housing programs and fair housing laws.

Strong advocacy, problem-solving, and negotiation skills.

Ability to engage with landlords and clients professionally and empathetically.

Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and database management.
