Job description:

Litigation Calendar Clerk

Garden City, NY

Description

Our law firm is growing and we need someone to manage our court calendar as if their life depends on it. But not just anyone. Here’s the deal - we need someone who:

  • is awesome
  • is ridiculously organized
  • thrives on resolving schedule conflicts
  • has a sincere desire to learn and grow
  • is a self-starter, and
  • does not settle for anything less than excellence.

When we say we need someone who is "awesome," we mean that: you get along well with others, you take ownership of your work, you're genuinely happy to help, and you're someone who can be counted on.

Are you still in?...

OK, let's get into the details. The above criteria covers the requisite traits and values the candidate must have in order to qualify. Below are the responsibilities and skills needed to succeed in this position.

Overview of the Position

  • Primary responsibility will be managing the firm's court/legal calendar and deadlines for attorneys (details below) as the firm's calendar clerk
  • Must be able to take action and work independently with limited direction
  • Must possess strong understanding of legal civil procedure, motions and court appearance types
  • Proficiency with NYSCEF required
  • Excellent and professional communication skills required - written and verbal
  • Confident and comfortable with regularly communicating with the courts, opposing counsel, adversaries, clients and, of course, the attorneys and other staff members of the firm
  • Additional responsibilities will include legal drafting and filing

Responsibilities:

  • Manage court/litigation calendar (return dates, deadlines, resolving scheduling conflicts, adjournment requests, scheduling/arranging EBTs, verify court appearance types (i.e In person/Virtual/Submission))
  • Draft/circulate/file stipulations
  • Monitor court filings (answers, counterclaims, motions, orders) and court notices; update files and personnel as needed
  • Updating case management as needed
  • Help manage deadlines by professionally communicating and advising attorneys/paralegals of filing deadlines and appearances
  • Prep/circulate/file PC and CC orders with opposing counsel
  • Prep physical (hard copy) files for attorneys for court
  • Arrange per diem attorneys for coverage
  • Draft/serve/file litigation documents such as discovery demands, subpoenas, replies, Note of Issue, etc.
  • Additional legal/office assistance as needed, including reception backup, assisting with processing mail

If any of these terms or responsibilities seem foreign, then this is probably not the right position for you.

Ideally, we are looking for someone with 1-3 years of litigation calendaring experience.
