ALS United Greater New York (ALSU/GNY) is seeking a Part Time Occupational/Physical Therapist.

ALSU/GNYs mission is to support and empower the ALS community through a collaborative approach to fostering bold research initiatives, advancing national and state advocacy, and providing comprehensive care to individuals and families affected by ALS. Our staff are professional and supportive of each other, as we work together to serve people with ALS and their families.

This half-time (20 hours per week) position will be a field role, consisting of on-site visits within our Greater New York region to the homes of people with ALS. Under the supervision of the Senior Assistive Technology Professional, this position will provide community follow-up for new equipment utilization and safety training. ALS is a degenerative, life limiting disease and requires a professional with compassion, patience, and a comfort level with end-of-life situations.

Overall Goal: Increase individual and family safety in the home through education and training with a focus on capability to assist with transfers, home safety techniques, and use of durable medical equipment.

Assess individuals physical and cognitive capabilities in their home to determine care needs and level of function.

Assess the capability of family members and aides to provide care needs.

Evaluate the need for Durable Medical Equipment.

Develop and implement Treatment Plan for individuals, family members, and caregivers, including ADL capabilities, care goals, transfers, and home safety.

Provide periodic presentations to groups in-person and virtually on OT/PT topics related to individuals with ALS and their families and caregivers.

Provide in-service training programs for other healthcare professionals.

Respond to individual and family questions related to transfers and home safety.

Work with patients to relieve pain and discomfort and maintain function.

Collaborate with and communicate relevant information with Clinic, Care Services staff, and community therapist where applicable.

Maintain professional knowledge and skills through continuing education.

Follow relevant healthcare regulations and standards

Respond to requests from ALSU/GNY supervisor and administration

Required Skills:

Lifting / Working in proximity with people with ALS.

Familiarity with power wheelchairs and patient lifts and training in their use.

Implementation of Assistive Devices - from letter boards to placement of switches

Excellent listening, speaking, and writing skills

Ability to recognize and effectively address unique situations

Attention to detail

Requirements:

Have and maintain dual state licensure (NY/NJ)

3 Years OT/PT experience with ALS or geriatrics

Driver's license and car .
