Metropolitan College of New York (MCNY) is a unique and vibrant learning institution. MCNY enrolls approximately 1,000 students annually into its accelerated degree programs with convenient onsite and remote schedules for added flexibility.

Summary:

The Welfare to Careers Project seeks to influence public welfare policy by demonstrating, through a replicable model, that a career-focused Bachelor’s degree with comprehensive support services will enable low-income, underserved people to achieve economic self-sufficiency. The Career Counselor provides ongoing career counseling, job placement and career readiness training for adult student participants and graduates of the Program, who are working but earn less than 200% of the poverty level.

Responsibilities include but not limited to the following:

  • Work with individual students and graduates on setting career goals and developing an action plan for achieving them and on implementation of the plan.
  • Conduct individual counseling sessions with students and graduates to discuss job-related stresses, barriers, and best practices.
  • Work with students and graduates on developing a resume and obtaining suitable personal, employer and academic references; work with students on updating resumes and preparing cover letters, as necessary.
  • Prepare students for interviews; counsel students on appropriate dress, “soft skills” and demeanor; role-play interviews. Educate students on self-directed job search.
  • Assist graduates in applying for master’s degree programs.
  • Participate in orientation, initial intake and screening sessions.
  • Conduct individual case management sessions with student participants
  • Assist students with academic advisement and assignments
  • Prepare and maintain case files, progress notes, biweekly reports, and other case-related paperwork.

Qualifications:

  • The ideal candidate should have a Bachelor’s degree with at least three years of experience in job readiness training and/or career counseling.
  • Experience working with welfare to work programs desirable.
  • We are looking for a self-starter with excellent interpersonal skills and an in-depth knowledge of the New York City labor market and business community culture.
  • Must be creative, results oriented, and a team player who is flexible and adept at providing in-depth personal counseling to assist participants with personal challenges to career success.
  • Must be able to work well with students, faculty, and administrators.
  • Must be willing to travel to various campuses in the Bronx and Brooklyn.
  • Career Counselor will work in a Higher Education environment;
  • Flexible work schedule depending on student need and schedules.
