Assistant Nurse Manager - Emergency Department


We're seeking a dedicated Assistant Nurse Manager for a full-time, night-shift position in our Emergency Department. This is an excellent opportunity for a leader who thrives in a dynamic healthcare environment.


Position Details

Employment Type: Full Time, Night Shift (3:00 PM - 1:00 AM, 4 days a week, 10 hours/day)

Salary Range: $140,000 - $180,000


Position Summary

In collaboration with the Nurse Manager, the Assistant Nurse Manager plays a crucial role in ensuring the delivery of quality clinical services and fostering a positive work environment. You will:

  • Assure the delivery of quality department/clinical services in accordance with established hospital and regulatory/accreditation agency standards.
  • Promote a positive and professional image, serving as a role model, coach, mentor, problem solver, and resource for staff and peers.
  • Be responsible and accountable for the overall operations of your assigned department, including the development of department goals and objectives consistent with the hospital mission and strategic plan, personnel management, and budget preparation/monitoring.
  • Manage the FTE component of staffing budgets.
  • Maintain 24-hour responsibility for nursing care provided on the unit.
  • Collaborate with physicians and other members of the Health Care Team to assure the delivery of optimum age-appropriate patient care.
  • Provide hospital supervision as required by the Division of Nursing.
  • Participate in the development of Evidence-based Standards of care for your clinical area of responsibility.
  • Assure employee compliance with hospital and Human Resources policies and procedures.
  • Assure that employee competency and education requirements are satisfied as per hospital policy.
  • Participate in the Performance Improvement Program as defined by the organization and the Division of Nursing.
  • Maintain knowledge related to the operations of your department
  • Work collaboratively with all levels of the hospital interdisciplinary team and promote the team concept within your department and hospital-wide.
  • Demonstrate positive customer service, foster positive employee relations, and assure that staff adheres to the Customer Service Behavioral Standards.



Essential Functions and Responsibilities Include the Following:

  • Develop and submit departmental goals and objectives aligned with Nursing and hospital strategic plans as required.
  • Conduct interviews, hire, evaluate, counsel, and terminate employees as per hospital policy.
  • Schedule staff based on the budgeted staffing plan and department needs.
  • Update the FTE component of staffing budgets on a continuous basis.
  • Provide house supervision as required by the Division of Nursing.
  • Attend and participate in educational programs or activities to maintain a current level of knowledge or expertise to manage the department.
  • Ensure service excellence initiatives and achieve organizational goals for patient satisfaction.
  • Conduct staff meetings monthly to update staff and/or address department issues and record meeting minutes for all staff.
  • Participate in committees, task forces, projects, etc., as required.
  • Adhere to the tenets of the Joint Commission National Patient Safety Goals.
  • Delegate activities to staff according to the tenets of the NYS Nurse Practice Act.
  • Adhere to the ANA Code of Nursing Ethics.
  • Adhere to all standards of care, policies and procedures including dress code, code of conduct, behavioral standards, completion of annual mandatory education, and completion of annual health assessment.
  • Work with the Magnet program director to align initiatives with the strategic plan and critical components of a Magnet Organization.



Education & Experience Requirements

  • Current NY State License.
  • BSN required or be matriculated in a BSN program with a plan for graduation by 1/1/2022 if hired prior to 2016, and by 1/1/2020 if hired between 2016 and 1/1/2018, and discussed with the Senior Vice President of Patient Care Services/CNO.
  • BLS certification (through American Heart Association) required.
  • ACLS certification (through American Heart Association) preferred, unless required by employees in the department supervised, then the certification is required.
  • Certification in area of specialty, or CNML (Certified Nurse Manager & Leader) preferred, but must be obtained within 3 years of hire date.
  • Previous management/leadership experience preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years relevant acute care experience.
  • Ability to function as a staff RN.
