Overview

Block is looking for an Engineering Manager for the Planning product who will lead a team of talented engineers in shaping the future of home renovation planning. This innovative platform empowers homeowners to visualize their dream spaces, receive personalized estimates, and select materials with confidence. Leveraging cutting-edge AI generation tools this product is transforming the way homeowners bring their ideas to life. You will have the exciting opportunity to be part of how this product evolves, guiding engineers in integrating cutting-edge technologies while remaining hands-on in the codebase yourself.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a team of 4-6 engineers, fostering a positive and inclusive work environment while providing mentorship and career growth opportunities, empowering engineers to able to do their best work
  • Work closely with the Tech Lead and Product Manager to align engineering efforts with squad goals and roadmap, managing work load and capacity of engineers on the team
  • Facilitate team cohesion by participating in code reviews, technical specification discussions, and engineering syncs
  • Collaborate with the Tech Lead and Engineering Director to ensure best practices, technical standards, and engineering excellence
  • Directly contribute to code (~50% of the time), taking ownership of development tasks while supporting the team's workload

Qualifications

  • 1+ years experience in engineering leadership or mentoring position (Tech Lead, Senior Engineer, Engineering Manager), 5+ years software engineering experience.
  • Proven ability to drive process improvements, technical innovation, team efficiency, and code quality.
  • Ability to balance management responsibilities with direct technical contribution
  • Comfortable and enthusiastic about AI coding tools and emerging technologies
  • Comfortable managing a remote team
  • Proficient in modern web technologies for both back-end and front-end (Next, Typescript, React, Apollo)

The current stack includes NextJS, Typescript, React, Feathers, and NodeJS, and proficiency with these technologies is highly advantageous. This team's product heavily utilizes LLM chains, making prior experience with AI chain integration or AI teams a valuable asset.

This role is ideal for someone who thrives on hands-on development and technical leadership, ensuring both strategic guidance and direct contribution to engineering efforts.

Block wants all employees to be supported in their personal and professional development, so we take a comprehensive approach to compensation and benefits. The initial salary for this position is expected to range from $149,000 to $210,000 for a NY-based position. Actual compensation will depend on numerous factors such as: experience, knowledge and skills, qualifications, location, and other job-related factors.
