Job Description

Job DescriptionDescription:

Let's get a few things out of the way:

  1. This is a full-time in-office position so if hybrid or WFH is your thing, or you live really far from our office, this position would not be the right fit.
  2. If you dream about working at a stuffy and uptight law firm, this would not be the right place either. Those places are great but that's just not us.
  3. This is not an entry level position; therefore, please do not apply unless you have meaningful litigation experience. (Depending on when you see this, we may have an entry-level position available if you search up our firm's other job ads.)
  4. If you don't have a demonstrated strong work ethic or reliability is not of the utmost importance to you, then please do not apply; we would simply not be a good fit for each other (and who wants that?).

Now that we set some ground rules and you're still here reading, if you’re truly awesome (defined as: you get along well with others, you take ownership of your work, you're genuinely happy to help, and you're someone who can be counted on) and you're somewhat intrigued by this job post, then know this: it is our pledge to ensure that you don’t dread coming into work every day. Heck, you'll probably miss coming into the office on the weekends (but arrangements can be made for that).

Here's the deal. We need someone who:

  • is awesome (see definition above),
  • is motivated and energetic,
  • has a sincere desire to learn and grow,
  • is a self-starter, and
  • does not settle for anything less than excellence.

The paralegal's responsibilities will generally include: being responsible for reviewing documentation (you know, by paying careful attention to detail); communicating with and providing clients with updates; conducting factual research (includes being really good with google) and some legal research; drafting/reviewing/editing/filing legal documents… the day will be over before you know it (seriously).

More specifically, the ideal candidate will possess a strong working knowledge of NY civil/commercial litigation and procedure, including;

  • familiar with CPLR and relevant procedure
  • being well-versed in legal documents such as pleadings - i.e. summons and complaints, answers, counterclaims, etc.
  • proficient in discovery - i.e. drafting/filing demands and responses, subpoenas
  • motion practice - understanding of motion practice/procedure and drafting motion papers such as notices of motion, affirmations/affidavits, memoranda of law, exhibits

Additional fundamental and necessary skills include:

  • excellent verbal and written communication skills - there will be regular contact with colleagues, clients, courts, opposing counsel and adversaries
  • proficiency in MS Word - including the ability to redline (track changes) and format documents
  • working with PDFs including redacting and obtaining esignatures
  • NYSCEF efiling

A final closing thought: if you think you'd be a good fit for this position, let us know why... ya know, in that cover letter no one likes to write.

Before you click Apply Now and start picturing yourself working at such an awesome place, please be sure to read the fine print:

  • You reside on the Island (Ok, Queens too) - long distance commutes rarely work out in the long term and we are looking for longevity
  • 2-3 years of paralegal experience in NY civil litigation required – we're happy to train on the specifics but we need you to have a strong working knowledge of legal terminology and processes
  • 1+ year of paralegal experience in commercial litigation preferred - if you can hit the ground running, that would be incredible
  • NYSCEF filing experience required
  • Desire and demonstrated ability to crush it. Every. Single. Day. required – energized and upbeat is the vibe we're going for
  • Organization and neatness required – it’s the only way to stay on top of your game
  • Flexibility and ability to work alone and with others required – we got a lot to do, so you need to be able to be productive on your own and step up as a team player as needed
  • Great PC skills required – you can be a Mac expert but you MUST know the difference between left click and right click
  • Proficiency in MS Word & Excel and GSuite (Gmail, Drive, Sheets) required
  • Enjoy a good slice of pizza preferred – this should speak for itself
  • Sense of humor can't hurt – after all, we’re spending a lot of time together
