Job DescriptionChartwell Books division of The Quarto Group is seeking to hire a creative book Designer to join our remote team. Chartwell is a leading publisher of value non-fiction titles that range from pop culture, lifestyle, food and drink, book plus, and self-help books. As a Designer, you’ll collaborate closely with our Editorial and Sales Departments to create a wide variety of book designs.
Key Results Areas
- Create visually captivating covers and uniquely designed interiors for highly illustrated books.
- Work on projects independently, collaborating with editorial team and illustrators.
- Manage color printing process and preflight files for printer.
- Work directly with Production team to answer queries from the printer.
- Help Publishing Director commission illustrators and freelance designers and monitor progress.
- Work on a variety of sales covers for sales pitches and conferences.
Minimum Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
Required
- Minimum of 1-3 years Design experience, preferably in print.
- Strong knowledge of typefaces and typography, full-color printing, RGB/CMYK color spaces, and image formats, and some facility with color correction of digital photography.
- Understanding of the book design process and technical knowledge of book production.
- Proficiency working with Adobe Creative Suite CC: InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Bridge, and Acrobat Pro.
- Excellent graphic design skills, with a passion and eye for good typography and design trends.
- Aptitude for creative thinking and effective problem solving, while staying within budget and on schedule.
- Ability to organize, prioritize, multitask, and coordinate workload.
- Must be a team player and able to work independently while knowing when to ask for help.
- Detail-Oriented: Exceptional attention to detail and file accuracy, with a proven ability to maintain high.
Desired
- Exceptional interpersonal and verbal communication skills, strong attention to detail, and timely and efficient follow-up.
- Working knowledge of MS Office programs: Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Curious and motivated to learn about new topics and other points of view.
Education and Experience
Required
- Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in graphic design, art, or related discipline.
