To deliver on this promise, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library/SNFL is seeking a bright, dynamic, and enthusiastic Supervising Librarian to provide leadership and direction to a team of public service professionals. SNFL is the largest circulating library in the NYPL system. This library is a vital hub for library patrons in and around the City of New York. It serves as a bridge between our neighborhood libraries and in-depth research library collections.
This role requires an individual passionate about fostering a team environment that embraces change and delivers excellent customer service. They must work collaboratively within the SNFL programming and outreach team, internal library departments, and our external partners.
Candidates who possess practical leadership skills and experience, as well as the ability to identify current and emerging administrative and programmatic operations of public libraries in an urban setting, are encouraged to apply.
Responsibilities
- Help to oversee and facilitate programmatic and outreach activities at the library
- Oversee the day-to-day operations in the branch, including reference and reader services. In the absence of managers, assume overall responsibility for the building's operations
- Work closely with the Director, Assistant Director, Managing Librarians, and other SNFL Library unit heads to provide strategic leadership, direction, planning and decision making to the SNFL team on all aspects of library services, programs and outreach:
- public service, the user experience, collection development & marketing and materials processing;
- policy implementation, library facility condition, and supervision, training, and performance evaluation of staff
- Collaborate with unit heads to support and deliver a full range of public programs and outreach services to meet the needs of a diverse community. This includes incorporating skills for digital and analog content creation.
- Utilize internal and external metrics to report on key issues to the SNFL Leadership team and key stakeholders to foster data-driven decision-making
- Partner and strategize with other NYPL departments (administrative, support, and programmatic) to develop and launch new service initiatives and resolve staff & operational issues
- Participate in library and institution-wide committees or task forces as needed, and represent the library at community external partnership meetings
- Perform other related duties as required
Required Education, Experience & SkillsRequired Education & Certifications
- ALA-accredited Master’s degree in Library and Information Studies
- Public Librarian’s Professional Certificate issued by the State of New York
Required Experience
- Demonstrated track record of successful implementation of public programs in a large urban public library.
- Demonstrated track record of successfully working with diverse populations and groups
- Demonstrated track record of connecting with community organizations and partners to promote the library and its resources
- Experience integrating emerging technologies and social media to bolster the patron experience and collaboration in both, physical and virtual spaces
Required Skills
- Outstanding interpersonal, oral, written and presentation skills
- Successfully demonstrated ability to exercise sound judgment, identify and assess problems and decisively implement appropriate solutions or recommendations
- Strong organization and planning skills, including the ability to manage multiple projects or tasks simultaneously and meet deadlines
- Strong analytical orientation with demonstrable experience using metrics to drive decision-making
- Strong proficiency in written and verbal Spanish. Other languages will be considered.
Managerial/Supervisory Responsibilities
- Reporting to the Managing Librarian, the Supervising Librarian will manage a small team of 2 to 6 professional staff.
