Job Description

About Greenbacker Capital

Greenbacker Capital is a leading renewable energy investment firm dedicated to accelerating the transition to a sustainable future. The firm operates two primary lines of business: (1) its Independent Power Producer (IPP) platform, known as Greenbacker Renewable Energy Company LLC (GREC), which owns and operates renewable energy assets across the United States; and (2) the Greenbacker Development Opportunities Fund, which provides growth capital to early-stage clean energy businesses.

This AVP role is part of the GREC / IPP platform and focuses on the acquisition, structuring, and financing of utility-scale and distributed renewable energy projects.

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced and motivated AVP to join the Investments team supporting the GREC platform. This individual will play a pivotal role in sourcing, evaluating, and executing investments across utility-scale solar, distributed generation, battery storage, and wind assets. The AVP will be involved in both deploying equity into new acquisitions and arranging project-level debt and tax equity financing. This includes leading commercial diligence, performing financial and risk analysis, and developing bespoke transaction structures to solve for critical assumptions such as power purchase pricing, construction costs, and market dynamics.

Importantly, the Investments team remains involved throughout the full lifecycle of transactions. The AVP will have an important role in post-close management, working closely with portfolio management, and other internal team to monitor asset performance, address issues, and to execute on capital recycling opportunities. This ensures ongoing accountability and value realization across the Greenbacker’s portfolio and investment hold period.

Key Responsibilities

  • Source and evaluate new investment opportunities for GREC, including acquisitions of renewable energy projects and platforms.
  • Structure and negotiate equity investments, addressing challenges like PPA terms, build costs, and timing.
  • Lead and support M&A, project finance, and tax equity transactions.
  • Conduct in-depth diligence, including financial modeling, valuation analysis, and risk assessments.
  • Coordinate with internal teams to ensure smooth execution and integration.
  • Develop and present materials for leadership and investment committee review.
  • Mentor and develop analysts and associates, fostering a collaborative and high-performing team environment.
  • Support post-close monitoring and issue resolution.
  • Stay abreast of industry trends, policy developments, and market opportunities in renewable energy and clean infrastructure.

Requirements

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, Economics, or a related field; MBA or other advanced degree is a plus but not required.
  • 5–7 years of relevant experience, ideally with exposure to renewable energy. This may include backgrounds in investment banking, project finance, private equity, infrastructure investment, or roles at Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and renewable energy developers.
  • Proven track record of executing complex transactions in the renewable energy sector.
  • Strong analytical and financial modeling skills.
  • Excellent presentation and written communication abilities.
  • Strong verbal communication skills to lead external workstreams with partners (e.g., lenders, advisors); relationship ownership rests with senior team members.
  • Demonstrated leadership and mentorship capabilities.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience with utility-scale solar, distributed generation, battery storage (standalone and co-located), and wind projects.
  • Familiarity with late-stage pre-NTP and operational asset investments.
  • Understanding of tax equity structures and financing mechanisms.

Work Environment

  • This position is based in our New York City office.
  • In-office presence is required; modest travel may be necessary for site visits, meetings, and industry conferences.

The salary range for this position in NYC is: from $155,000.00 to $204,000.00.
