About the position

Citizen Action is looking to add a Campaign Manager for the Invest in Our New York (IONY) campaign. The Campaign Manager will work with the IONY campaign staff, coalition members, partners, and supporters to develop and implement a legislative campaign and organizing strategy that will advance the fight for a more economically just New York State. This role involves coordinating and strengthening the IONY coalition, facilitating consensus driven decision-making among partners, supporting and supervising IONY staff, managing grassroots and direct lobbying efforts, managing political relationships with elected officials and key legislative stakeholders, and raising and managing a budget of over $1 million. This position will report to the Co-Executive Director.

What youll do and the impact you'll make

  • Coalition Organizing and Management:
    • Oversee and lead the development and execution of the Invest in Our New York coalitions legislative, communications, and organizing strategies. These strategies should advance a progressive economic worldview and strengthen grassroots power-building and leadership development.
    • Coordinate the successful execution of the coalition strategy while ensuring that the coalitions efforts center on the needs and leadership of directly impacted people, and in particular the leadership of New Yorks base-building organizations.
    • Convene and facilitate coalition partner organizations to develop and execute a strategy to advance the Invest in Our New York campaign.
    • Identify and recruit coalition partners, including grassroots groups and labor organizations, to help develop and implement a shared strategy to advance our campaign.
    • Regularly communicate campaign updates to coalition partners.
  • Campaign Strategy:
    • Work with IONY staff to organize lobby days, actions, campaign actions, media coverage and other campaign activities on behalf of the coalition and/or coalition partner organizations.
    • Create or assist in creating campaign materials, talking points, organizing toolkits, digital tools including websites, lobbying materials, research reports, polling, and other materials as needed.
  • Political and Legislative Advocacy:
    • Oversee coalition efforts to advocate for policy changes at the state level including through grassroots and direct lobbying.
    • Develop and manage relationships with elected officials to advance campaign goals.
    • Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders such as labor unions.
  • Budget:
    • Lead and coordinate fundraising efforts to raise the coalitions budget. This includes C3 and C4 fundraising.
    • Cultivate relationships with mid and high-level donors and foundations and develop written fundraising materials including grant proposals, funder reports and more.
    • Manage the coalitions budget in coordination with the Steering Committee, the Director of Finance and the Executive Director(s) of Public Policy and Education Fund/Citizen Action of New York.
  • Staff Management: Supervise campaign staff and manage campaign consultants, as needed.
  • Additional duties as assigned by your supervisor.


Skills/Qualifications

  • 5+ years of directly relevant experience with grassroots organizing campaigns, preferably advocacy-based and/or political campaigns.
  • 3+ years of experience supervising staff and a proven track-record of leadership development.
  • 3+ years of experience with developing and advancing organizing programs and campaigns, or similar.
  • Demonstrated experience fundraising and managing relationships with foundations and/or individual donors.
  • Strong facilitation skills and capacity to manage consensus driven decision-making among organizational partners with differing interests, backgrounds and constituencies.
  • Exceptional communication skills, including an ability to engage a variety of stakeholders such as community organizations, grassroots member leaders, unions, issue coalitions, elected officials, and members of the press.
  • High-level of personal organization including the ability to manage deadlines for multiple projects.
  • Familiarity and experience with the New York State political and social justice movement landscape.
  • Familiarity with or ability and willingness to fully adopt the use of tech tools, including:
  • CRM & digital campaigning: Action Network, EveryAction, VAN, Mobilize, Soapboxx, New/Mode, Spoke/Relay, Divi, Strive, Mailchimp
  • Project management: Asana, Google Drive, Slack, Airtable, Zoom
  • Ability for statewide travel, travel to D.C., and to work some evenings and weekends
  • Bilingual Spanish speaker is a plus


Supervisory Responsibility:

  • This role supervises a small team of 2. Supervisory responsibility may also extend to hired consultants.


Location

This position may be based anywhere in New York State. In-person participation in meetings and events is required. In-person participation in meetings and events may be required at different locations. Travel will primarily be to Albany and Washington D.C.


This job requires frequent, multi-day travel across New York State to provide on-the-ground coverage for in-person events.

Please note, all benefits are subject to change.


Salary: $82,119-$89,219. Applicants in NYC may receive up to a 10% pay differential. Total salary depends on experience.
