The New York Public Library (NYPL) Early Childhood team seeks an enthusiastic candidate to fill the role of Early Childhood Outreach Associate.. The Early Childhood Outreach Associate will work with the Early Childhood and related children’s services teams at NYPL as well as community partners to promote NYPL’s children programs and services in the Bronx. They will support the early literacy department’s initiatives with a focus on Bronx libraries and community outreach partners. This position will include conducting early literacy programming in an outreach setting such as pediatric clinics and community fairs.
*This is a temporary grant funded position.*
We are looking for someone we can count on to:
Own:

  • The selection of outreach opportunities for early literacy programs to community organizations with a focus on organizations that serve families with children 0-5 years old
  • Collaborate with managers and Bronx-based children’s librarians and branch staff to help plan programs.
  • Participation in regular grant check in meetings with the NYPL team and grant partners

Teach:

  • Early literacy programs that can be conducted in outreach settings for children ages 0 to 5
  • Inventory management of outreach materials

Learn:

  • The goals of the Early Childhood department and our philosophy for working with young children 0-5 inclusive of NYPL’s strategic vision and our Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility goals as they relate to outreach

Improve:

  • Partnerships with Bronx community partners
  • Early childhood outreach support to branch staff in the Bronx

Some expectations for this role are that within:
1 month, this person will:

  • Meet with with Bronx branch staff and assess current status of early literacy programming and outreach
  • Learn overview of grant including grant deliverables and timeline
  • Develop early childhood outreach goals to support NYPL grants

3 months, this person will:

  • Meet with Bronx community partners
  • Create outreach materials and plan for programming

6 months and beyond, this person will:

  • Communicate s with branch staff and community partners to conduct ongoing outreach programs
  • Support early literacy programs and outreach

Responsibilities

  • Develop print materials or activity curricula for branch staff to support early literacy outreach initiatives
  • Collaborate with branch staff in early literacy programs including storytimes, caregiver conversations, play programs, community baby showers and early childhood class visits to support the creation of a supportive community
  • Perform early literacy outreach with branch staff or individually to community organizations with a focus on organizations that serve families with children 0-5 years old
  • Sorting and shipping of outreach materials to branches and community partners
  • Assist the Early Childhood Education department with system-wide initiatives
  • Collaborate with managers and Bronx-based children’s librarians and branch staff to help plan and implement programs.
  • Work with the Early Childhood Outreach Manager, Early Childhood Outreach team, NYPL staff and community partners to promote NYPL’s children’s programs and services with special emphasis in the Bronx
  • Performs other assigned duties as necessary


Required Education, Experience & SkillsRequired Education & Certifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in education, public health, library science or related field or 3+ years of additional related experience required

Required Experience

  • Experience facilitating community or education programs
  • Experience working with children ages 0-12

Required Skills

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills and have a high level of comfort engaging with individuals and groups of all abilities and from a wide range of backgrounds
  • Demonstrated computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Suite
  • Interest in early literacy, early child development, and community engagement
  • Ability to learn quickly and manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Ability to travel within the Bronx

Work Environment

  • Office setting with at least 2 days per week traveling to Bronx libraries and community outreach partners
  • Outdoor setting

Physical Duties

  • Requires travel within NYC (predominantly to the Bronx and Manhattan)
  • Moving and/or lifting of supply boxes or program supplies up to 30 lbs may be required

Schedule

  • 20 hours per week to be scheduled between Monday-Friday 9:00am-6:00pm. Evening and weekend hours required as needed.
