Overview:
The Compliance Specialist supports the credit union’s Compliance Program by helping ensure adherence to applicable federal and New York State regulations, NCUA guidelines, and internal policies. This role is ideal for a recent law school graduate with a strong interest in financial services, regulatory compliance, and consumer protection laws. The successful candidate will gain hands-on experience monitoring regulatory changes, performing compliance reviews, and assisting with internal training.
Responsibilities:
Specific duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Maintains a proficient knowledge of all applicable laws, rules, and regulations, participates in various project teams as the compliance liaison, and assists in conducting various compliance analysis and assessments. This may involve a large amount of data entry.
- Monitor and changes in federal and state laws and regulations that impact credit union operations, such as the Truth in Lending Act (TILA), Equal Credit Opportunity Act (ECOA), Bank Secrecy Act (BSA), Fair Lending, and NCUA regulations.
- Support compliance reviews and audits, including documentation gathering, testing, and reporting under the guidance of senior compliance staff.
- Reports findings to the Vice President of Compliance and Manager of Compliance and conduct follow-up reviews as necessary.
- Assists the Manager of Compliance with course assignments of annual compliance training for entire Credit Union.
- Assist Management with keeping abreast of regulatory changes, communicating these changes to applicable business line stakeholders, as well as ensuring those changes are properly implemented by the business lines to update policies and procedures, as needed, to keep abreast of updates and/or hot topics of regulatory issues within the industry.
- Assists with monitoring and investigating complaints from members as reported to the various state and federal agencies, Supervisory Committee, and direct mail.
- Review of advertising marketing materials to ensure compliance with regulatory guidelines.
- Perform other duties as required.
Requirements:
- Experience performing compliance or quality check reviews.
- 3 or more years’ work experience in consumer compliance.
- Knowledge of federal and state banking laws applicable to consumer lending and deposit products (e.g. Reg Z, E, DD, CC, UDAAP, and FCRA)
- Excellent knowledge of consumer lending and deposit products and services.
- Integrity, ability to work independently, and strong problem solving and critical analysis skills.
- Exceptional collaboration skills.
- Desire to work as part of a high performing, demanding team.
- Knowledge of SmartSheets and ability to format data sets.
- Strong verbal, written communication skills.
- BA/JD Degree
Competencies:

- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
