Farnham Family Services is Oswego County’s leader in substance use disorder treatment, prevention, and recovery services committed to promoting wellness, recovery, and resilience in individuals and families. We are seeking a mission-driven Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to join our executive team and lead the financial strategy in a way that will sustain and grow our impact in the community.


Job Summary:


The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is a key member of the executive leadership team, responsible for leading the organization’s financial planning, strategy, and analysis. This role oversees the financial and operational infrastructure, ensuring the long-term fiscal health and sustainability of Farnham Family Services. The CFO provides high-level financial leadership and partners with administrative and board leadership in a collaborative environment supported by strong executive and board engagement to support informed decision-making.

Strategic Financial Leadership

  • Develop and lead the organization’s financial strategy in alignment with long-term goals and mission.
  • Lead short- and long-term cash flow strategies to support service continuity, timely vendor payments, and growth planning
  • Serve as a strategic partner to the Executive Director and Board of Directors, offering data-driven insights and financial forecasting to support organizational planning and growth.
  • Provide clear, concise financial information to support sound decisions and the ability to interpret financial statements and reports.
  • Participate in organization-wide planning, risk management, and strategy development.
  • Ability to identify and mitigate financial risks and ensure compliance with regulations.

Oversight of Financial Operations

  • Oversee the Controller and ensure effective day-to-day financial operations, including general accounting, cash flow, A/P and A/R, payroll, reconciliations, and month-end closing.
  • Lead the preparation of annual and multi-year budgets; monitor financial performance against budget.
  • Ensure timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports.
  • Coordinate annual audits and serve as the primary liaison to external auditors.

Grants, Revenue Cycle, and Compliance

  • Provide strategic oversight of the Grants Manager and RCM (Revenue Cycle Management) team to ensure compliance with federal, state, and private funding requirements and accurate billing, collections, and reconciliation processes.
  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements and adherence to nonprofit accounting standards.
  • Work with HR and compliance staff to assess and manage financial and operational risk across the organization.

Equipment, Machines and Software Used:

  • Ability to operate various office equipment including computer, printer, telephone, fax machine, photocopier, scanner, and calculator.
  • Computer Software: Microsoft Office to include Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Excel.

Supervisory Responsibility:

Supervise and support the Controller, Finance Assistants (Levels 1 & 2), RCM Team, and Grants Manager.


Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in finance, Accounting, or related field required.
  • MBA or Master’s degree in Nonprofit Management, Finance, Accounting, or related field preferred.
  • CPA or CMA certification strongly preferred.
  • Experience in OASAS-funded or CARF- accredited programs strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with NYS government contracts and grants.
  • Minimum 10 years of progressive financial experience including Investment Experience or CFA, with at least 5 years in a senior leadership capacity.
  • Deep experience in nonprofit financial management, including fund accounting, compliance, budgeting, and audits.
  • Familiarity with healthcare billing (Medicaid/Medicare), grants management, and government contracts.
  • Proven leadership and management skills to effectively lead a finance team and collaborate with other departments.
  • Knowledge of financial systems and tools -Sage Intacct, RCM Billing Software, Excel Spreadsheet Advanced Level-Pivot tables/Macros/Financial Modeling, Grant management systems.
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to connect financial data to mission impact.
  • Excellent communication skills — able to convey complex financials to non-financial stakeholders.
  • Proven team builder who can lead, mentor, and grow a high-performing finance team.

Physical and Mental Requirements:

  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, use hands to grasp, handle or feel, reach, crouch, bend, or kneel, and perform repetitive motions of the hands and/or wrists (typing).
  • Ability to exert up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
  • Close mental and visual attention required to perform work dealing primarily with preparing, analyzing, and interpreting data and figures, using a computer terminal, and/or extensive reading.

Environmental Conditions:


Potential for exposure to adverse environmental conditions. Work is performed in a typical office work environment with little to no travel to client/service locations. Understands and follows infection control standards and complies with the use of personal protection equipment to prevent exposure and transmission of communicable disease.
