Job Description

The Company:

Founded in 2012, What If Media Group is an award-winning performance marketing company that enables the world’s leading brands to acquire valuable new customers at scale. By leveraging data-driven engagement and re-engagement strategies across multiple marketing channels, and utilizing insights based on millions of consumer ad interactions each day, WIMG delivers cost-effective and profitable performance marketing solutions that extend lifetime value and maximize ROI. Headquartered in Fort Lee, New Jersey, WIMG is a multi-year honoree of both the Inc. 5000 list of the fastest-growing private companies in America and Crain’s Fast 50, which recognizes the New York area’s most rapidly expanding companies based on revenue.

The Role:

We are seeking a candidate with experience as a content marketer and/or copywriter across various channels, with particular interest in newsletter and email marketing. As we build out our newsletter program and optimize monetization across both email and web properties, we need someone who understands audience engagement and has an interest in newsletter best practices.

In addition to having a strong aptitude for supporting and driving content strategy, copywriting, and an understanding of content best practices, this person must also be innovative and forward-thinking, helping us to challenge the status quo, explore content roads less-traveled, and write for diverse brands and audiences.

This is a cross-functional role, and this person should be comfortable collaborating with a team and contributing to small and large group discussions. They should also possess a natural curiosity of content best practices, particularly in the newsletter space, the ability to see and dissect the different aspects of a piece, and a desire to stay on top of industry trends. Ability to collaborate effectively and to continually adapt and improve content based on internal and user-testing feedback is paramount. You should have the capacity to digest and understand technical information and have experience working with varying types of content management systems and tools. Above all, this person should have a gritty work ethic and willingness to assist with tasks beyond the scope of their regular assignments. In our rapidly growing company and evolving industry, someone who offers a unique perspective while remaining an adaptable team player is a must.

This is a hybrid position that will work from our New York City office, in addition to working from home.

Responsibilities:

  • Regularly write new content for our various channels - with a focus on newsletters/email - and assist with content for newsletter landing pages, sites, and other areas as needed

  • Support the development and optimization of our newsletter program, including content creation and monetization initiatives

  • Write content for our brand expansion efforts, researching and exploring angles that go beyond our status quo

  • Take the initiative to write new content that helps us diversify our existing offerings and appeals to new clients/advertisers

  • Dissect content to identify and combine what aspects of a piece are working and what aspects are not, particularly focusing on email engagement metrics

  • Write for a variety of clients and audiences, based on nuanced guidelines and performance trends

  • Regularly contribute to weekly check-ins and brainstorms, both within the content team and with other departments

  • Set up tests and pull stats for independently-run inquiries

  • Track and document key points, assignments, goals, progress, and findings to ensure that the content team is moving towards its quarterly objectives

Required Qualifications:

  • 1-2 years of experience as a content strategist, copywriter, or related position, preferably with some newsletter/email marketing exposure

  • Experience writing for a variety of audiences, clients, and media

  • Interest in or experience with newsletter development and email marketing best practices

  • Experience working on marketing campaigns as part of a cross-functional team, requiring communicating with people from various departments

  • Experience working on both successful and challenging initiatives that have led to professional growth and discernment

  • Ability to look at content in a nuanced way, putting winning aspects of various pieces together to create a winning piece

  • Desire to initiate assignments and tests independently to work towards departmental goals

  • A strong aptitude for copywriting and grammar

  • Natural curiosity and enthusiasm that motivates work beyond the call of duty

  • Ability to balance and prioritize multiple tasks to meet strict deadlines

  • Self-starter, positive attitude, gritty work ethic

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with email sending services and newsletter platforms (MailChimp, Beehiiv, or similar)

  • Understanding of newsletter monetization strategies (sponsorships, affiliate, programmatic)

  • Knowledge of email metrics and how to optimize for engagement

  • Understanding of SMTP and how email works

  • Basic knowledge of Looker or similar analytics tools

  • Experience in digital marketing or social media

  • Familiarity with newsletter industry trends and best practices

Education:

  • B.S. in Communications, Marketing, English, Journalism, or a related field (preferred but not required).

Interested candidates should submit a resume and a cover letter. Writing samples or a portfolio would be preferred, particularly any examples of newsletter or email content you've created.
