Job Summary:

Kommissary is a social enterprise on a mission to spread joy through food. We produce and deliver high volumes of meals spanning a diverse array of cuisines to every demographic in New York City.

We are looking for a highly organized and tech-savvy Junior Sous Chef to support our culinary team. This role requires mastery of cooking, various computer applications, software, and design tools, including Google Suite and Adobe. The Junior Sous Chef will be responsible for cooking, administrative tasks, inventory management, label creation, and ensuring efficient communication within the team.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and cook meals to meet Kommissary’s high-quality standards in a fast-paced, high-volume kitchen environment. Requires strong technical skills, teamwork, and the ability to maintain consistency under pressure.
  • Provide comprehensive administrative assistance to the culinary team, including scheduling meetings, calendar management, managing correspondence, and maintaining organized documentation.
  • Design and print labels for inventory, menu items, and food storage, ensuring clarity and organization in the kitchen.
  • Assist in inputting manufacturing orders into Inflow, monitoring inventory levels, placing orders for supplies, and conducting regular audits to ensure stock accuracy.
  • Be the technological hands of the chefs - support Executive Chefs to file updates for recipes, ordering sheets, new menus, menu descriptions and recipe files
  • Generate reports on unit conversions from recipes, inventory usage, food costs, and operational efficiency to support the culinary team’s decision-making processes.
  • Assist in planning and coordinating culinary events and special projects, managing logistical details to ensure successful execution.
  • Responsible for clerical functions and administrative support of food service programs.
  • Attend in-service and/or safety meetings as required.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; a degree in culinary arts, hospitality management, or a related field is preferred.
  • Previous experience in a Junior Sous Chef role, ideally within a restaurant, catering, or hospitality environment.
  • Proficiency in Google Suite, Adobe Creative Suite, and inventory management software; ability to create visually appealing labels.
  • Exceptional organizational and multitasking abilities, with a keen attention to detail.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse teams.
  • Proactive approach to identifying challenges and implementing effective solutions.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.

Physical Demands: This role typically operates in a standard office and commissary kitchen environment. The position requires the ability to remain stationary or stand for extended periods—ranging from 4 to 8 hours—including sitting, standing, bending, squatting, twisting, and moving intermittently throughout the workday. Frequent use of office equipment such as computers, keyboards, mice, calculators, copiers, printers, and mobile smartphone devices is essential. The employee must consistently maintain a comfortable position while using computer equipment. In the kitchen, the role requires the safe and proficient use of various kitchen equipment and tools, including knives, to prepare and handle food products. Proper handling and maintenance of knives and kitchen machinery are critical to ensuring safety and efficiency. The role involves moving around both the office and kitchen areas approximately 50% of the time each. The ability to lift objects up to 50 pounds is required. Close vision is necessary to perform job duties effectively. Additionally, this position involves frequent communication with others, requiring the ability to exchange accurate and clear information.
