About Sherwood Design Engineers
Sherwood is a civil and environmental engineering firm that is committed to investing in and embracing people, communities and the environment.
Our team has delivered net zero energy and net zero carbon systems, net positive water systems, resilient coastlines, natural resource protection, green streets, living roofs and more for thousands of clients in the region and across the globe. We specialize in sustainable infrastructure, water management strategies, green building design, and systems based solutions for infrastructure and landscapes. Our focus is on the conservation and management of the consumption of all site resources — carbon, energy, water, and waste. We’ve worked on over thirty award-winning projects, and our work has been published locally and internationally.
Founded in 2003, our award-winning projects include Hudson Yards in New York (the largest private real estate development in U.S. history), San Francisco Better Streets Plan, Greater New Orleans Urban Water Plan, revitalization of the iconic waterfront Brooklyn Bridge Park, and the 35 square-km Baietan Urban Area Plan in the heart of Guangzhou, China.
Our mission is to engineer an environmentally and socially regenerative planet. Will you join us?
Role Summary
We are seeking an innovative and technically skilled Systems Technologist to join our multidisciplinary team specializing in Design, Civil Engineering, Ecology, and Hydrology. You’ll play a central role in building a new kind of environmental intelligence system—one that senses, learns, and responds.
This role leads the technical development of systems that gather, process, and visualize environmental data, directly supporting impactful design and engineering solutions. We know this is not a conventional software or control systems job, and we hope you are as excited as we are about that. If you enjoy pushing technology boundaries to create smarter, more responsive ecological and infrastructure systems, we’d love to have you on our team.
Minimum Skills
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Electronics, Wireless Communications, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
- 5+ years of experience in IoT systems, sensor networks, or data pipeline development—ideally within AEC, urban systems, or environmental contexts. Demonstrated expertise in rapid prototyping and solution architecture for environmental sensor networks.
- Familiarity with cloud services (Firebase, AWS, Azure, GCP, Supabase) and IoT protocols (LoRaWAN, MQTT, WebSockets), and environmental sensing devices.
- Familiarity with API development, RESTful services, and real-time data handling.
- Hands-on prototyping and testing experience with sensor devices, including single-node or small swarm sensor-node prototypes
- Excellent communication skills, especially in translating technical content to interdisciplinary teams.
Preferred Skills
- Passion for ecological intelligence, environmental data, and hyper-performance urban systems.
- Proactive, experimental mindset with the ability to navigate ambiguity and shape early-stage systems.
- Familiarity in digital twins(FIWARE, Omniverse, Eclipse Ditto), geospatial modeling, or interactive simulation environments.
Expected Outcomes
- Design and solution-architect IoT-based sensor networks for environmental monitoring and infrastructure performance tracking; oversee development and maintenance of sensor-to-digital-twin data pipelines (IoT inputs → cloud/backend → real-time visualization) from internal teams and consultants.
- Develop IoT Integration Plans for environmental/ecological intelligence masterplans and sensor-network strategies for campuses or large-scale infrastructure developments; produce clear technical reports and documentation on sensor networks, digital twins, and environmental intelligence applications.
- Collaborate closely with engineers, ecologists, and hydrologists to define sensor requirements, data collection methods, and system integration approaches.
- Interface and coordinate with control systems engineers for integration into broader building and site management systems.
- Maintain an open-minded, eager-to-learn approach toward environmental simulations (H&H, CFD), digital twins, geosensing, and AI/ML technologies; actively contribute to strategic planning for digital transformation initiatives within the firm's project portfolio.
What We Offer
- Own a part of the firm with ESOP eligibility after one year
- Flexible working - with every other Friday off
- Competitive Health plans, including PPO and HMO options, Dental and Vision plans
- Learning and Development stipend to use as you see fit
- Generous PTO and 8 paid holidays
- Automatic 401k enrollment
- Fun team events, lunches and happy hours to get to know colleagues outside of work
- A tangible opportunity to truly help the environment!
