First Look- Software Engineer (WordPress Backend):


The Arena Group is seeking a Software Engineer with experience working in WordPress internals to join its best-in-class, fast growing publishing technology platform, which powers some of the largest sites on the internet, including Athlon Sports, TheStreet, Parade, and many more. In this role, you’ll work with a diverse team of top-notch engineers, designers, and product managers. You’ll build new capabilities to our headless WordPress publishing platform and watch them be used by millions of users. You’ll also have the ability to learn or further develop your skills in areas such as microservice architecture, data analytics, API design, and AI. The ideal candidate for this fully remote position is a self-starter who thrives in a fast-paced environment and works well across a variety of stakeholders (editorial teams, sales teams, designers, engineers, executives and product managers).


The Arena Group’s expected annualized base salary range for this position is currently $110,000-160,000. Actual salaries will vary based on multiple factors including, but not limited to location, education, experience and other factors permitted by law. The listed salary range is but one component of The Arena Group’s total compensation and benefits available to its employees.

What You’ll Do


  • Work closely with Product Managers and Designers to build new features for our growing publisher base.

  • Produce high-quality scalable code that is well tested and easily maintained.

  • Participate in all phases of the software development cycle.

  • Assist the skilled support and operations teams in triaging and resolving production issues.


What You’ll Bring

  • Experience working with the internals of the WordPress CMS (extending Taxonomies, optimizing queries, connecting new data sources, stretching Gutenberg to meet new editorial workflows, etc.)

  • 4+ years of proven expertise building web applications professionally and working comfortably with all layers of the application stack, from infrastructure to front-end.

  • Strong computer science fundamentals: data structures, algorithms, programming languages, systems, and information retrieval.

  • Proficiency in writing scalable, testable, and maintainable code

  • The ability to multitask, prioritize, and manage time efficiently

  • Experience working on a microservice architecture is a plus
