The Legal Aid Society of Northeastern New York, a nonprofit civil legal services program, is seeking a HR Generalist. Legal Aid's mission is to fight for fairness, dignity, and justice for those living in poverty and for a society that is inclusive and equitable for all. We transform lives, build communities, and empower people by using the law to address individual and systemic wrongs and inequities. Our service area spans sixteen counties, in upstate New York, encompassing six regional offices. About the Role:


This role will be responsible for developing, implementing, and sustaining initiatives that foster a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace. This role will run the daily functions of the Human Resources (HR) department, including hiring and interviewing potential employees, administering pay, benefits, and leave, and enforcing company policies and practices. This role works collaboratively with leadership and employees, to ensure LASNNY's policies, programs, and culture reflect a commitment to equity, belonging, and anti-racism.



Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ensures compliance with mandatory and optional training, continuing education, and performance assessments, including safety, anti-harassment, licensure, and certifications.
  • Conducts or coordinates background checks, eligibility verifications, new hire orientation, and employee recognition programs.
  • Administers HR programs covering compensation, benefits, leave, productivity, morale, occupational health and safety, and training.
  • Responds to employment-related inquiries and escalates complex issues as needed.
  • Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws; regularly reviews and updates policies.
  • Stays informed on HR trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies.
  • Develops and implements culture strategies aligned with LASNNY's mission and values.
  • Promotes an inclusive workplace by identifying barriers to equity and addressing discrimination or bias through policy updates and recruitment strategies.
  • Gathers and analyzes employee feedback to evaluate culture and inclusion initiatives.

Skills and Education Requirements


  • Bachelor's degree in human resources, Organizational Development, or a related field, or the equivalent experience (4 years in practice).
  • Minimum three years of additional experience in HR or a related field.
  • Excellent writing, communication, facilitation, and relationship building skills.
  • Ability to analyze data and use metrics to measure program effectiveness.
  • Passion for social justice, equity, and fostering an inclusive workplace.



Preferred Experience & Education


  • Experience working in a unionized or nonprofit environment.
  • SHRM-CP a plus.
  • Ability to speak more than one language a plus.


Work Environment


This position operates in a professional law office environment and occasionally may require the carrying of regular office supplies. This role requires the use of standard office equipment and software and remote videoconferencing platforms.
