Harlem Children’s Zone (HCZ) — a world-renowned education and poverty-fighting organization based in New York — seeks an enthusiastic, dedicated, and mission-aligned Assistant Director at The Armory.

The Assistant Director will bring a passion for the mission of Harlem Children’s Zone: break the cycle of intergenerational poverty with comprehensive, on-the-ground programming that builds up opportunities for children and families to thrive in school, work, and life.

We are seeking an Assistant Director to oversee and manage the daily operations of The Armory. The ideal candidate will be a highly motivated, organized, and detail-oriented professional with extensive experience in program and project management. A strong background and fervent passion for sports, health, and fitness are essential for this role.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or higher
  • 5+ years (preferred) of progressive experience in a supervisory role leading a team of employees (3 years minimum)
  • Intense passion for and ample program management experience with sports, health, and fitness

Who you are

  • A demonstrated commitment to the mission and programs of HCZ
  • The ideal candidate will have experience managing a large recreation center or fitness facility that offers a variety of programming
  • Experience working with youth and adolescent population
  • Comfortable working with outside community organizations and contracted program providers
  • Must have excellent management and administrative skills
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written
  • Knowledge of and sensitivity to issues prevalent in underserved communities of color
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Outlook
  • Ability to work flexible hours, as required by the demands of the program

What you’ll do

  • Manage all sports programs, both internally and externally
  • Develop and organize sports, fitness, and health workshops for program participants
  • Supervise Coordinators, Instructors, Coaches, Sports Specialists, and other staff
  • Serve as the hub for all HCZ programs with limited space for sports and physical activities
  • Direct staff to ensure efficient, successful program delivery
  • Help develop programs, procedures, and processes where needed (i.e., operations, staffing, and budgets)
  • Enforce all policies and procedures to ensure the safety of program participants and staff
  • Stay in compliance with regulations enumerated by HCZ; the Department of Health; the Department of Youth and Community Development, and the School Age Child Care license requirements
  • Ensure the facility is always prepared for planned and impromptu site visits and inspections
  • Manage and review data, and ensure completion and dissemination of all reports as required
  • Ensure programs consistently meet and exceed the goals set where appropriate
  • Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with city agencies, community organizations, schools, and parents
  • Foster strong relationships and effective communications with HCZ senior leadership and staff
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Schedule

  • Monday - Friday, 9 am-5 pm or 12 pm-8 pm (depending on the needs of the site)
  • Weekends as needed
