Robert Half is partnering with a boutique and highly specialized systems engineering consulting firm, working on government transportation infrastructure projects, that is looking to hire Controller to lead all accounting and administrative functions. This is a key position that blends financial oversight, compliance, HR support, and operational coordination. The ideal candidate brings strong accounting skills, thrives in a small business environment, and is eager to take ownership of a broad range of responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities
Accounting & Finance
- Perform monthly bank reconciliations and manage daily bank account activity
- Prepare and issue client invoices and financial reports
- Reconcile accounts payable and receivable; categorize and file invoices
- Manage payroll processing, payroll tax filings, and 401(k) contributions
- Prepare and submit annual filings including W-2s, 1099s, 1120-S, K-1s, and ECET documentation
- Maintain labor cost tracking spreadsheets and update for proposals and budgeting
- Coordinate with external CPA on audits and financial reviews
- Prepare annual cost-basis submissions for state transportation agency approvals
- Maintain federal System for Award Management (SAM) registration
HR & Administrative Functions
- Maintain and update the Employee Handbook in coordination with legal counsel
- Coordinate employee recruitment, background checks, onboarding, and offboarding
- Oversee employee benefits enrollments and administer E-Verify
- Track and ensure compliance with insurance requirements for staff, clients, and subcontractors
- Assist in logistics planning for industry events and meetings
Compliance & Special Projects
- Ensure compliance with government contracting requirements, including Federal Acquisition Regulations (FAR 31.2)
- Assist with preparation of cost proposals and documentation for audits
- Support senior leadership with ad hoc financial analysis and special projects
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field
- 7+ years of experience in accounting, preferably in a small business or government contractor setting
- Strong proficiency in QuickBooks, Excel, and Microsoft Office
- Familiarity with payroll tax filing processes and general HR practices
- Experience with FAR 31.2 or cost accounting for government contracts is a plus
- Excellent communication skills and high attention to detail
- Ability to manage confidential information with discretion
