Job Description

We’re seeking an experienced, people-focused Human Resources Manager to join our leadership team and help build the HR infrastructure of a fast-growing, values-driven management firm. In this role, you’ll serve as a strategic advisor, recruiter, culture builder, and compliance lead — playing a critical role in shaping how we hire, develop, and retain great people across both our corporate team and retail cannabis dispensaries.

You’ll lead full-cycle recruiting, support our leaders in building high-performing teams, and bring structure to our HR operations — all while navigating the complexities of union environments, evolving labor laws, and a highly regulated industry. This position requires exceptional discretion, strong communication, and a proactive, problem-solving mindset.

As the company scales, you’ll be positioned to grow into a Director of HR role, leading your own team and department. This is an exciting opportunity for a driven, mission-aligned HR professional to make a lasting impact inside a company that truly values people and culture.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Recruitment & Talent Acquisition
    • Lead full-cycle recruitment for corporate and retail roles within the cannabis industry, including job postings, screening, interviewing, and onboarding
    • Build and maintain structured hiring workflows that align with company culture and growth plans
  • ATS & HR Systems Management
    • Manage applicant tracking systems and recruitment platforms (e.g., Gusto, KayaPush, ZipRecruiter, Monday.com)
    • Ensure candidate data integrity, workflow automation, and integration across platforms
  • Team Leadership & Supervision
    • Oversee and support staff across multiple locations, offering coaching, feedback, and personnel development
    • Collaborate with department heads to address staffing needs and succession planning
  • Policy Development & Compliance
    • Create, update, and implement HR policies, handbooks, and SOPs in line with NYC/NYS labor laws
    • Ensure consistent policy application across all retail and corporate environments
  • Training & Onboarding
    • Design and deliver effective training programs for new hires, management, and specialized teams
    • Lead structured onboarding experiences to integrate new employees into the company culture
  • Project & Change Management
    • Drive HR initiatives and cross-functional projects to improve workflows, compliance, and communication
    • Lead or support organizational changes with minimal disruption and strong engagement
  • KPI Tracking & Reporting
    • Define and track key HR performance indicators such as turnover, time-to-fill, employee engagement, and retention
    • Provide leadership with regular insights and data to inform workforce decisions
  • Union & Labor Relations
    • Act as point person for union-related matters including contract negotiation, grievances, and compliance
    • Coordinate with legal counsel and operations to ensure proper implementation of labor agreements
  • Strategic HR Advising
    • Serve as a trusted consultant to executive leadership on team structure, conflict resolution, and workforce planning
    • Help align HR strategy with business goals in a high-growth, multi-entity environment
  • Scalable HR Infrastructure
    • Build systems, practices, and documentation that support the company’s continued expansion
    • Ensure HR processes are sustainable and adaptable as the organization grows across new markets and dispensaries

Qualifications:

  • Experience:
    • Minimum of 3–5 years of human resources experience in a unionized workplace.
    • Prior experience in a startup or small business environment is highly desirable.
    • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Knowledge:

    • In-depth understanding of HR best practices, employment legislation, and workplace compliance standards.
    • Familiarity with labor relations and collective bargaining processes in unionized settings.
  • Skills:
    • Exceptional communication and interpersonal abilities.
    • Strong problem-solving and conflict-resolution skills.
    • Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Tech-Savvy:
    • Proficient in using HR software platforms (e.g., HRIS systems) and remote collaboration tools (e.g., Slack, Zoom, Trello).
    • Commitment to Diversity & Inclusion:
    • Demonstrated experience or strong passion for fostering diverse and inclusive work environments.
    • Understanding of justice-involvement issues is a significant plus.
